It's interesting to check out other senior forums: It gives one food for thought.

I decided to look around at other senior forums. I found that many of the folks who are currently in here, are in other forums, many using the same icons/avatars and names they use in here, or their actual names, first and last.

What I found more interesting, though, is that those who were banned, in here, came back, and then left in a huff, are on other forums, spewing the same nonsense they did, in here. The difference is that in those other forums they've found many kindred souls who approve of their drivel.

This, for me, confirms what (I think) we all know about the internet: No matter how whacked out you are, no matter how disgusting your take on things may be, on the internet you will always find others who share your warped ideas, as long as you do a little searching.

With the above in mind, I believe I see the internet for what it is: While it may unite us, in a very broad sense, as we communicate with each other, ultimately it stokes our divisive nature, as a species, as it lets outliers validate their twisted take on life by hearing encouraging words from other outcasts of society. One needs only to watch the nightly news, or click on a news site, online, to see the terrible consequences of that.

Yeah, we all wonder how we'd get along without the internet. Any Luddite leanings I may have, aside, and my use of the internet to communicate for business and non-business reasons bearing witness to its value to me, I actually would like to see the internet go away, although I'm positive that will not happen, until our species either destroys itself in some global conflagration, or a ruling, worldwide government does a serious crackdown. I think the former is more likely, Big Brother notwithstanding. (Yes, I know, one of the main reasons the internet was designed was to prevent a breakdown of communication, for military operations, during an all-out war.)

Obviously, I can easily choose to not be online. I'm not the problem, though, as I see it (LOL!). Most of the above hit me when I saw one of our "alums" on another forum. This guy, I really disliked, when he was in here. He posted dreck, and was banned a few times. On this other forum, though, he's a damn hero. Everything he posts, he gets praised on, including kudos from the moderator of the forum! Man - - -

(Yep, he could say negative things about me, I know. Again, here we have the internet simply shining the spotlight on how different we all are, in many ways, and keeping those differences front and center.)

Interesting post, Treeguy, and it really does provide food for thought.

I guess my point of view on this is a little less negative. People will always seek out and find kindred spirits no matter what (or how twisted) their ideas are. The internet doesn't create anything new in this department; it just makes the interaction quicker and easier across geographic distances. I think providing a forum for the exchange of ideas is a good thing, providing the forum isn't a veiled system for people grouping together to commit violence.

Probably the most interesting part, IMO, was that someone who was apparently a troublemaker on this forum, was banned, etc. had become a hero on another forum. There's a lesson in there about human nature, probably.

Does this just indicate the amount of control the system administrators want to have? Maybe some are just more permissive about what they allow?

I agree with both of the above posts, and that was part of my point: The internet makes it easier for "bad people" to find each other, and (possibly) formulate plans to do harm to their fellow human beings.

I am a member of one of the other forums that you are talking about..I don't participate much just read what interests me. There are 4 or 5 members there that used to be on my ignore list here!!!!

Yep I'm a member of one of those forums... same one as you ken as you know ... it's just a small forum, so people kinda know each other quite well.. and despite the odd person who is not so nice, they're easily put on ignore, yep even on a small forum there's still a few bad apples masquerading as peaches to the naive . !!..however there are some members there who are genuinely nice people and I enjoy their posts and think of them as friends as I do here with many ...

I also know the forum to which treeguy refers where the majority of those who were banned from here migrated... I couldn't be less interested in that forum, I come to forums to relax and pass the time of day , not to fight and argue!!

I've always been puzzled as to why folks change their names when moving from place to place? Ashamed of ourselves? Allows one to post trash without (hopefully) being "recognized"?

I have to laugh at some posters on one of the other major forums. They are missing from most day to day discussions UNLESS gun ownership is questioned. At that point the bugles sound and they rush out,, ready to do battle. It becomes so obvious that you have to chuckle as soon as you see the word "gun". They don't give a s--t if someone's family is run over by a tractor trailer but if the news states that some gun owner has been fortunate enough to enjoy a "thrill killing" of some bad actor, they can't heap enough praise on that person, whether the killing is warranted or not.

But again, regarding the title of the thread - - -why do people want to move about using assumed names? Most of us don't do it in real life. My name's the same at the pharmacy, gas station, grocery store, on here, and to my family. Should I be changing it on the internet?

People may use different names on separate forums, but you can soon recognise them by their style of writing and their behaviour. There are many people who use the internet to get attention. The 'poor me' syndrome is encouraged. It makes people feel virtuous, giving sympathy to some pathetic little s.. who has too much time on his hands and uses it to concentrate on his petty little woes. The internet also allows bullies to vent their nastiness, which they wouldn't get away with in their real lives. It means that you can't get a decent discussion going because they are always spoiled by those who deliberately cause arguments. I've given up now, and I'm just using this site and avoiding the serious topics; which is a pity as there are political issues I would like explained to me by those more knowledgeable than myself.

This is the only forum I participate in. Well, NextDoor, too, but I'm about to bail out on that one. That forum attracts a few who post interesting local news, but their number is far outweighed the incessantly complaining malcontents.

I'm not interested in checking out other senior forums. I do have other interests other than people my age. Please :wink1:

I've looked around a little and will continue to but so far this is the most comfortable fit for me.

I hope that everyone takes the time to look around and find a place where they feel welcome.

If you didn't care for the forums you visited, then what difference does it make who is there or what they are posting about?

I pride myself to be an honest forum member here. I didn't join for ANY other reason.
So, when I post something, unless I say so, please believe me, Saves a lot of cyberspace &
time. I try not to shout by using a large font which bothers a lot of folks. I try to obey all the
rules. Thanks for listening.

I was permanently banned from "the other forum". No notice, just one time I clicked on it and this popped up on my screen. That was back in last October.

Screenshot_2019-06-14 ProBoards - Free Forums Free Message Boards.jpg

Then when I was out in California I logged on (different IP) and found that when other members had asked where I was the moderator had answered them that my ban had been only for 10 days and the fact that I had not come back was on me. This kind of bothered me so I registered under a different name so I could log on and set the record straight. However when I confronted the moderator on that she claimed that I was wrong and that I could come back anytime, it was up to me. Well as you can see from the screenshot above that I took just a few minutes ago she was lying. So screw that place.

P.S.I downloaded the OPERA browser that someone posted about which hides your ip address and I found that I could access that forum that way. But I have no interest in it anymore. As for the ban, I probably had that coming. I can be pretty caustic. But the moderator lying about why I hadn't come back was a deal breaker for me.

I have never been banned from a forum but I’m fully aware of members who popped up, here under a different UN after being banned you know by the way they treat others and their posts who they are .

Im sure I’d be banned from another forum if I was to pass on emails from a another member to the owner of that forum (not for what I said) I fully believe that forum has a “favourite” members list

I checked out other senior forums before coming here. The fact that they allowed political discussions was a big red flag for me, and it didn't take a genius to see what that would lead to.

I guess you didn't really "get" the gist of my post, CM. No biggie. If you read it, again, hopefully it'll come through. If not, I'll be happy to break it down, in here, if you want me to.

I’m just happy the degenerates found a kindred place

As far as names, I’m Gary O’ wherever they let me be
‘cept a couple forum programs that don’t recognize apostrophes or spaces for names

Oh, and I enjoy the internet....of my choosing

With regard to forums who ask for First and last names ..those names are almost always not the members real names . Mine certainly isn't , I wouldn't dream of using my real first and last name on a forum!!
