I've got a chair?

On a recent TV programme, a professor said that having been offered a 'chair' by a prestigious institute in the USA, he was most surprised to also receive a real chair. He had supposed that 'chair' was merely a title, but he got out his Allen keys and screwdrivers assuming that the chair would be 'flat packed'. He was delighted when a very nice 'Windsor' chair with his name on it was delivered to him fully assembled.

I mentioned this to my daughter who has recently become a professor, but apart from an increase in status and salary, there was nothing else. I asked if she didn't have a nice name plate on her office door. She said it was a piece of card held on with a plastic clip. Things are just not the same here!
