Jim Gaffigan... Why America is Better than the UK

Funny clip :)
I have been to New York several times and always found New Yorkers to be generous, friendly and very funny. Great memories.
Anyone from Jersey City? I still have my matchbooks from The Iron Monkey
I didn't make it to New York during my one visit to the USA, though was told by a bartender from the city how hard nosed everyone was there, (apologies if its an injustice!).

I can only go by experience and that was never my impression. I usually think when people say "everyone" their view is biased anyway.

I once worked for an American lawyer, best boss I ever had :)

What worries me is that so many British people...do their utmost to copy America in everything.....which is why our country is now on a downward slope to the gutter.
So you're saying...it's the fault of the "so many British people" making their own choice to copy evil in America and not the good* in America? You're saying "so many British people" are too weak to make their own choices and are just mindless robots?

We know that's not true so you're saying the blame lands on those
"many British people" for why your "country is now on a downward slope to the gutter".

I give the British people a lot more credit.
I think they are intelligent enough to make their own choices...
it's just that some make wrong choices...we all do, some more than others

* You don't notice the many good things about America that "so many Americans" have chosen??
I'm sorry but to blame others for your own people's choices is _______ .

Now that is a provocative statement!! What worries me is that so many British people believe that it is true and do their utmost to copy America in everything.....which is why our country is now on a downward slope to the gutter.

I agree, I doubt many Brits would want to live in the USA.. except the young who are enamoured with all things bright and shiny American that they see on the Internet...the majority of grown ups who've carried out their research who want to migrate outside of Europe tend more so to choose Australia, NZ, & Canada...

aww I didn't even think of that being derogatory tbh ... I just saw it as a personal expression by Lavinia, so the latter part of the sentence barely registered tbh.... sorry that it upset you .... :(....however I have to say I once asked on the forum, a simple question about America.. I was torn to ribbons..I was told how dare I attack the USA.. how dare I..blah , blah, blah.... on and on, ... I was stunned, it was a simple question that only Americans could answer so that's why I asked it here.. but yet the sensitivity was off the scale...

Hollydolly, wondering if you have ever been to the US? I've spent a lot of time in the UK and Europe. I can guarantee you that the "real" US bears no relationship to the US portrayed in the media there.

No I personally haven't been to the USA but have many family members and friends who have visted, and also have many friends who actually live in the USA due to their job contracts

While traveling outside the US I have almost unfailingly found locals to be kind, helpful and quite likeable. Also generally complimentary about Americans. That's been true in Canada, Europe, Mexico, New Zealand and Rarotonga.

When our children were 7 & 9 we visited NZ for ten days. We reminded them many times that they were representing American children so they were to be on their best behavior.

At one point we stopped in a post office to mail some post cards. Outside there was an elderly woman struggling with her cane and an unwieldy, odd-shaped package. Our kids offered to carry the package inside for her. When we got inside my husband realized she hadn't quite closed the package (a gift for her grandchildren). He asked the desk clerk for some tape and with the woman's permission he unwrapped the package and rewrapped it securely.

The woman kept thanking us. At the end she said something like - You're Americans, aren't you? We said yes, we were. She said, I figured as much. One of my fellow citizens wouldn't have lifted a hand to help me.

While I didn't think for a moment that it was true that NZers would be so heartless (and indeed it hadn't been our experience during that trip), it warmed my heart that she thought highly of Americans and that our little family had strengthened her favorable impression.

I've had numerous English friends and acquaintances over the years who've moved to the US. Wonderful people, all, even if they do indulge in a big joint for Christmas dinner and crackers afterwards. (Had to have those explained to me!)

Geez. Next, can we start a thread entitled "Why we hate _______ country"?

it's such a pity, I don't think the OP would have ever dreamed this lighthearted supposedly funny video would cause such angst here ...OTOH I am used to how these things can turn on a sixpence and I would never have posted this, but the OP is new to the forum, and probably not aware how easily things like this can turn sour...

Patriotits are insufferable.

Fair enough. I know you are smart and well-informed but despite what Pepper said life here can be pretty sweet.

... biscuits? What does "crackers" mean?

Christmas crackers, which contain little gifts, and a little joke or motto, and a paper hat to wear on Christmas day.. they're pulled apart by 2 people, and they bang like pop gun..

No animosity here?

"What worries me is that so many British people believe that it is true and do their utmost to copy America in everything.....which is why our country is now on a downward slope to the gutter."
Well I didn't take that statement as a negative reaction to the thread, it just sounded like an observation albeit not a flattering one.
You have to admit, America's pop culture is mostly uncouth & trashy, but to be fair is linked in many ways to trashy pop culture of the UK and other countries in the world.

Compared to pop culture in the UK, US pop culture looks like the Golden Age of Athens.
