June Is Black Music Appreciation Month. Post Your Favorites

Since I love the blues, both Delta and Chicago, for me, every day is an appreciation day for the music that started in the tobacco and cotton fields. My father sang all those old songs he learned during the depression picking cotton with the descendants of the southern slaves. I grew up with blues harmonica and guitar.

Since she was an inspiration for Chuck Berry and made blues also rock and roll, I have a special love for Sister Rosetta.

If you are seriously interested in the real American history about the music that came from the American south slaves and their descendants, then this video by Sam Chatmon is a good way to get started learning about why the blues came to be. It wasn't entertainment, it was an expression of life, a release of emotion, a way of living and dealing with the hardships of life.

This song makes me laugh. "You can wear your miniskirt way on above your knees, and you can go shake your jelly with whatever man you please....." :ROFLMAO: My hubs loves this tune and says since I keep a very clean house, I have permission to wear a miniskirt way above my knees, but its a big NO on shaking my jelly with any man I please. :ROFLMAO: Damn my OCD and obsession with keeping a clean well arranged house. :ROFLMAO: No more monkeydog with old dapper Sam for that bad housekeeper. LOL!

Cab Calloway was phenomenally popular in his day. He was the first black American to sell a million records of a song and the first black musician to have a national syndicated radio program.
Cab Calloway was on The Ed Sullivan Show, one of the 2 weeks in a row, that the Beatles were on also. It was either New York City, or the following week in Miami. Probably the first Sunday in New York City. Anyways, there was all of these white teenage girls in the audience. While Cab Calloway was singing Minnie the Moocher, the camera panned the audience and the looks on the faces of the teenage girls was priceless. They weren't sure what kind of music they were listening to, let alone, who they were listening to.
