Just an odd exchange between to people..."Why did you stay in bed all day?"

  • Client: I stayed in bed all day because I was depressed.
  • Therapist: How do you know that? Maybe you were depressed because you stayed in bed all day. Or maybe one thing has nothing to do with the other.

What do you think? Anyway just a random topic, something to ponder for comments, whatever comes to
mind...
This is the first sign of depression !!…( not wanting to get out of bed to face the world ).
was the therapist qualified FGS…..😵‍💫

Staying in bed all day is Greek to me! I almost always get up by 4 AM. If I sleep until 5 AM, it's a rare day. Anyway, I love being retired and am far, far from being depressed. (My secret to be happy is not to have cable TV and get a lot of exercise and fresh air; eating healthy food helps too).
I completely get what you are saying. Exercise and having a good attitude with plenty of things to do, certainly can ward off depression for most people. Unfortunately due to genetics, horrific life circumstances, medication, grieving over a loved one etc. can render some with clinical depression which is a chemical imbalance in the brain. This type of imbalance is a serious disorder and NOT a lifestyle choice.

I exercise and bla bla. I don't have a TV. I still get depressed in the winter. It's literally difficult to move. I force myself to get up, and I have to choose my battles, e.g., exercise or errands, housework or cooking. Then feel exhausted and try to gather strength for the next round.

Now we have longer days and warmer weather, and I feel 100% better.

There is no simple fix. Antidepressants help some people but not all.

40 years ago, I was going through depression. The psycharitist (sp?) SUGGESTED that I start going out doors, walking or running. 40 years later, I still walk 3 miles daily and I am oblivious to issues that my family, neighbours and the world is going through.
