Just canceled by amex gold bus card of 25 years now I need a new credit card...

I use it/them for debit cards ...I have no credit --and no debt.....any recommendations on which card and why to apple for to replace it. thank you.

I like Amex blue. No yearly charge and the points are likely as good as any card. Also have their high yield savings account.

I decided to get a credit card a few years ago. However I got in trouble with credit cards in the 1990s,
& didn't use any credit for anything for 25 years. Even though I figured my credit rating was not very good,
I applied for a credit card with Fidelity and was surprised they gave me one immediately with a very high limit.

That was probably due to my having had a traditional IRA there for quite a few years, and also a savings account.
Prior to applying I had checked and was surprised to see my credit rating was over 700, even though I had paid
cash for everything for 25 years. Now after using their credit card for a couple of years my credit rating is over 800.

The point is that even though you've not used a credit card before, you can probably qualify for one, as long as
you haven't been badly in debt. The Fidelity credit card gives 2% cash back on all purchases, which is nice. Also their
savings accounts pay a 2.95% interest, and the savings account at Capitol One is currently paying a ' 4.00% ' interest rate.

We've had a Discover Card for about 50 years, and never had any issues with it. We use it for most of our routine purchases....gas, groceries, etc., and pay the bill, in full, every month. That way, we don't need to carry a bunch of cash, write a check at the store. The last time we paid any interest was back in the 1980's when we made our last house payment. We also have a Walmart card, and the wife has a Kohl's card...which we occasionally use...and pay in full if we do. Our credit score bounces between 820 and 830.

The "trick" is to use a credit card just for the convenience, and Never carry a balance. Making "minimum" payments can quickly double the cost of whatever you buy,.

We roll Discover rewards to Amazon for "play money".

Keep in mind that if you apply for a card and it gets declined that will impact your credit scores negatively for some time. There are sites like Credit Karma which can look at your credit profile and recommend cards where your odds of application approval are high.

Fidelity really isn't the financial institution backing the credit card. Fidelity is the face of that card.

Elan Financial Services is the creditor and issuer of the Fidelity® Rewards Visa Signature® Card program. Fidelity has worked with Elan to provide this credit card program; however, Fidelity and Elan Financial Services are separate companies.

We had that card for the 2% cash back. But when I purchased a shed online & a flimsy scarf showed up I contested that. Elan "investigated" & came to the conclusion that I was responsible for the billing.

I copied & pasted a picture of the shed I ordered, included a picture of the invoice, a picture of the scarf, a picture of the tracking. All proving that the seller commited fraud. Elan "investigator" denied all that. I took that same info to the Fidelity office here. The agent agreed with me & made a phone call to Elan. Elan agent removed the charge but never apologized for their incompentence. That agent also made sure the credit card was cancelled.

We've been with Discover for 37 years now & the service & attention we receive along with the cash back has been excellent.

IMO, if you pay off your balance every month, it would be very difficult to beat the Costco Citi Card. They pay you almost every time you use it, and I use it for everything. At the end of every Feb, they send you a check which you can either spend at Costco, or buy a candy bar there, and they give you the rest in cash. So far this year they owe me $370. I've been doing it for years, and I still can't believe it's true.

If canceling a card means you will need a replacement it’s best to get the replacement first.

i like the 2% cards that give cash back on everything. It adds up.

My motto is "American Express... don't leave home without another card". I have two Amex cards and do not use them because:
1. Some places don't take Amex.

2. I had the card declined when we checked in at our timeshare resort one time. I had at least a $10,000 limit and nothing else was on that card at the time. That was the reason for my Amex motto..

3. Card holders have to have at least $25 in rewards to be able to cash them out. Since I use other cards with the same or better reward rates it would take me too long to reach that $25.

If you Google best credit cards or something similar, you'll pull up a listing of cards and what their benefits are. Some are better if you want travel rewards, some are better for business owners, etc. The listings will tell if they're are fees or not.
