Just gets weirder and weirder

For our senior trip this month, we went to a buffet where there is gambling on slot machines. We were each given $15 credit with which to play, but before this we had to show our driver's license. When I did the agent asked me if I knew my license had expired. Of course I didn't or I would have taken care of it. This begs the question of why I was not notified by the DMV that my license was about to expire back in April.

This was late Friday and the DMV was closed for the weekend. I thought I could get some info on the DMV website, but to do that for personal info, the user must create an account and enter name, DOB, license # and SSN. When I did I received the message that there was no record of anyone matching the info I submitted.

Looks like I will have to pay a personal visit to the DMV to straighten this out.
 

You should have gotten a renewal notice in the mail. It's obvious you didn't get it.

I don't follow this forum every day but aren't you the one that wasn't getting her snail mail? If it's not you...forget I mentioned it.

I usually check expiration dates every once in a while, especially in April, my birthday month. I still have 2 years on my DL.

Also checked my passport and I'm good for 5 more years.
 
I was just going to suggest that it was missing when you didn't get your mail. I got my renewal notice one month before it expired. I was shocked at what they required to be able to renew it ---- (this is Wisconsin ) I need a "certified" copy of my birth certificate AND my marriage license ! I also needed my original social security card & proof of residency ,( my latest drivers license) What a hassle !

Wow, that's a lot! The last time I renewed I finally had to go to the DMV. Usually I just had to send them a check and it was done through the mail.

Guess they finally decided they needed a more current photo of me. All I had to bring was my current DL. Also had to take the vision test.
 
Here in NY, our licenses are good for 8 years. It's not something you think about until a thing like this happens. What bothers me most is that I can't register for online help because, apparently, I am non-existent to them.

Yep, even with an appointment like I had there was a line. Maybe you should make one though since you have an expired license you may have to do the written and visual...hopefully not the driving part though.

I would start studying just in case....

Expired licenses are treated differently than just a renewal. Even though you didn't get a notice because of your mail issue, I doubt they care.

I got my renewal notice this past week....in the mail...about 60 days before my license expires. Here, its a pretty quick process...bring a second ID, with name/address, etc....voter ID card, Utility bill, etc., take a quick vision test, pay $10, and within a few minutes the new license is printed, and good for another 3 years. My Wife had hers renewed a couple of months ago, and we just stopped by the DMV while running errands, and we were in and out in about 20 minutes.

A person should Always be aware of when their DL is due to expire...as it is the Primary ID for most activities. If a renewal notice doesn't come at least 30 days in advance, a person should take some action on their own.
 
I just looked at my license. It not only didn't have my mailing address on it, but the wrong street address. If they mailed it to me they probably put the wrong info on it and it wasn't delivered. I didn't move, our town just changed the numbers on the house a few years ago. Added to the fact that the post office will not deliver mail unless it has my PO box number on it somewhere. What a mess.

I think it will still be your fault. You are responsible for checking these things when you get them. For your sake, I hope I'm wrong.

If you happen to be an AAA member, here in Mass., there are selected AAA offices where you can re-new your license. My wife did it last week and yes, the needed paperwork is much greater than before if you want the up-graded version of a license which is accepted as I.D. in almost all cases. The lesser level license, not requiring as much paperwork (which you can select) will not be acceptable for I.D. by airlines when flying among other limitations.

Im not an AAA member anymore. I still have 2 years on my current license. I'm not sure what kind I have but I do have a passport for I.D. Anyway.
 
Hopefully you won't need to go through the entire process again...
I did,I had misplaced my license,didn't think to much about it.
Hubby was going to the DMV for something different and suggested I go along and get a duplicate license, well,she put my name it and it came up expired like 3 years prior. ..wound up having to take,the 5-hour course,permit test and road test!
My kids thought it was hilarious, offered to take me out to practice, teach me how to parallel park and figured I'd be taking the 5 hour course with everyone who had a DWI...quite a couple of comedians I raised.
 
I can't laugh at anyone who does this...….I drove for almost an entire year on an expired license about 45 years ago. I could have SWORN it wasn't up for renewal until the next year. Lucky me I didn't get stopped for anything. I know I cashed checks/wrote checks/etc during the year but nobody mentioned it.

Unless one is age 85 and above, here in Texas the renewal is every six years [age 85 and above is every 2 years.]
One only has to go to the MVD office every other renewal... otherwise you can renew on line, by phone or mail.

The advantages of living in a small, upstate area. In and out of the DMV in 10 minutes. No exams, to proofs of residency - just and eye test and photo. Will get new license in 7 to 10 business days.
