Just had a stranger knock on our door, from Russia..mid 20's...we let her in

We live in the country side, it is 12 degrees out, and she knocks and says "I need water and to use a phone". Misa and I decided to let her in. Made her coffee and she used our smartphone. She was waking on the highway nearby and saw our farm. She talked pretty good english but translating her concepts of her situation wasn't eay. Apparently she is running away from "bad" men. She started crying when she reached the point of not knowing where she was going to go. She was calling someone she trusted in a town about 60 miles away. She stayed 15 minutes, and then left. Misa looked outside a few minutes later and couldn't see her. very weird!

Let's hope she wasn't casing the house of 'elderly people'...for anyone else... ..I know I'm a cynic, but it pays to be these days.,

Let's also hope she didn't use your smartphone to access your financials. Check your bank account. Seriously.

Never let a stranger use your smartphone. They need to make a call? Call the number for them, and hand them the phone when it's answered.

Very kind of you, and probably what I would have done.

However, and unfortunately, the warnings others have stated are based on reality. Keep being kind, just be careful at the same time...

Paco,
Better get out your shotgun & keep it handy at night. She might have been casing your place & then "BAD" people will come at night to rob you. So be very leery of people like this. They can put on a really good act.

If she disappeared that fast there must have been a car waiting on her.

I checked my account...no activity. We don't have anything of value...really, so what would they gain? No one can hack into our bank accounts in 15 minutes., unless it is a BIG operation. I only have $10K plus a medium SS coming in monthly. I am just planning to survive about 6 more years anyway. :)
I asked her if she came to Ameirca to get married, and she said no, she wanted to have cows!

That's a strange answer. People from Russia don't just come here legally without money.

The obvious question to ask is 'How did she get into the country....people smugglers?' If it were me, I think I'd have taken a photo of her and then checked with the police to see if she was on the run.

If she’s escaping from bad men, it could be that she’s part a human traffic sex ring.

You could call the police and ask if they’ve heard of a missing woman. You think she’s in her 20s, she could be much younger.

Her story just doesn't seem to add up with the calling someone 60 miles away and then leaving your home 15 minutes later and instantly disappearing. There is absolutely no way for someone to get to your place 60 miles away that quickly unless she was being human trafficked and someone was waiting for her outside the home and followed her there and as soon as she left they grabbed her and took off, but that is probably not the case because then when the person coming for her 60 miles away would have most likely knocked on your door asking where she was. I doubt she would have been able to get into your account on your phone, but I would still check it. I would also like the others said just be cautious that she might have been a look out for others to come later. Be Safe.

I think you were very lucky. A young girl in need of "help" could have been a decoy for the "bad men" lurking off to the side until you opened the door. Of course. I am a super cynical New Yorker.

Just to be safe, you might want to report this incident to your local police. Just so there is a record of it in case she is in trouble, or an incident like this happens elsewhere with a different outcome.

I have reached a place in my life that I will give love instead of suspicion. I know there is risk, especially in todays wild times, but I feel like adding more suspicion and fear is the wrong way to go at such a pivotal point in our evolution. I remember the scene in "Little Big Man" when Dustins
blind Indian "Grandfather" said "It is a good day to die". I loved that sequence, and hope I have that other worldly state of mind at some point, because this one is a mess.

"Sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't" he calls his new girl "Don't like horses." :ROFLMAO:

Was there any place she could have been that would not be visible? If I were her I'd be trying to stay out of sight (and out of the wind if was 12 degrees out) until my friend came.
It is very hard to know what to do about strangers, I doubt if an ordinary person can tell the difference between the genuine and the deceptive, I always read/hear about 'trust your instincts', but I sometimes watch YouTubes that analyze the body language of people suspected of crimes and I'm just completely unable to notice any but the most obvious clues that someone is lying.
There was some article in the news several years ago that said a tourist knocked on a door (in Florida I think) to get help but was shot dead by the people who lived there.

I wonder how she would possibly have gotten to your place.
And to your area.
Did she say anything about that?
You know your local area. Have any ideas?

@Paco Dennis Your wanting to be kind is admirable, and I really hope that our concern is unfounded. Please check your credit and debit cards and continue to check them again from time to time throughout the day and intermittently for the next few days. You say that no one could hack into your accounts in 15 minutes. You are very wrong on that score. It takes seconds whether or not a PIN or print is needed. Please believe me. She may have been legit, but as other posters have pointed out, her story just doesn't add up.

Did she specifically ask to use your cell phone? That may be so your/her location couldn’t be traced if using a landline.

Scenario 1. She’s escaping from a sex trafficking ring. Hitch hiked and ended up in your area. Took off and continuing walking with plans to meet up down the road with whomever she called. Cows, maybe they promised something different that this new line of work.

Scenario 2. She’s casing your place and has decided you’re not rich enough to rob.

Scenario 3. Could be anything totally innocent.

I highly doubt that. It's easier to rob someone at gunpoint than to hack a bank account.

@Paco Dennis Let me clarify "hacking" from your phone...someone who wants to do so merely has to have your phone in their hands in order to "copy" everything on it. This would include purchases you made using a credit or debit card on any site where you used a credit/debit card. If your laptop is linked to your phone, they'll also have access to anything on the laptop.

@RFW One doesn't have to have specific bank info to get into your account. Anywhere the card has been used will leave a trail leading to the bank info.

I'm not a cybersecurity expert. I get my info from my son, who is a cybersecurity expert with the certifications that go along with it.

I used to feel that I could and should trust people until they showed me that I couldn't. Now I don't trust anyone until they show me that I can.

I believe that involves social engineering. It's a lot of work. Not something you can do in 15 mins unless you already have enough background info on the target.

You and Misa are very kind for helping her out, the temps by me are very frigid now also, I'm sure she appreciated your kindness. I hope she does okay, and the person she called helps her.
