Just received a letter from my insurance provider

Why not just email a copy of the letter to the insurance company and let them answer if they sent it so you know if it is a scam or not? You posted a copy for us, so you apparently have a scanner or some means to send them a copy.

As for the age of the car, you wouldn't collect enough if it was totaled to justify the collision premium, and even if it's a minor repair, like a dented fender, you first have to meet your deductible, then the balance of the repair would almost surely be more than the car's book value, so it's still totaled for insurance purposes.

Have your agent contact the underwriter and get you the answer.

That’s part of his/her job and also part of why they are paid.

You may also want to speed things up by checking your account online by going to the insurer’s website and signing in. Your account should be available to you after signing in.

Aren't there insurance offices in your area?
I guess maybe? But the last two or three auto insurance companies I used were an online deal. Using Progressive now. I haven't had any claims, but have made numerous changes in the last couple of years. Their customer service number has always been quick and the people I talked to on the phone were very professional and helpful. Around $550 every six months for three cars, and one of those includes what they call ride share coverage.

Mine is all online too, with GEICO.

Full coverage on one vehicle, $750.10 every six months.

I do most things online but their customer service folks have always been excellent.

The roadside assistance, included in the coverage, is also very responsive.

I carry quite a bit more than the state required minimums but it gives me some peace of mind to know that I will be protected in the event of a catastrophic accident.

$1100 per year for 3 cars? OMG, that's a bargain for car insurance premium.

That's for 3 older cars. I got rid of my last ever newer style car in 2017, it was a sorry excuse for a real car. Can't stand how they have perverted new cars into unreliable distractions that all look alike and are built from parts that come from the lowest bidder/cheapest source.

I went to the nearest insurance company this morning and showed the letter to an agent. He said he would investigate it. When I got home, I had this email from him:

Everything is fine with your insurance policies. I looked into it, and the letter was mailed by mistake. Our staff was reviewing your policy, and they clicked the wrong button at the end which sent out that letter in error. I didn’t realize it was sent until I checked today. I’m sorry for the trouble. You can disregard the letter.

Looks like a case of the usual employee incompetence.

I'm stunned at how much you're paying for Motor Insurance cover..
And that's for 6 months. Double that for a year. However, it would probably be more for a new car.

When I spoke with the agent today, I mentioned that I didn't know how a credit rating could affect the policy since they get paid regardless. He said, "It shouldn't."

In some states it's illegal for insurance companies to do a credit check on potential clients. Unfortunately, New York is not one of them.

It is illegal for insurance companies to perform a full credit check or use credit information to set rates in California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts for auto and homeowners insurance. Additionally, Maryland, Michigan, Oregon, and Utah restrict the use of credit information for denying or canceling policies, although it may still be used to set rates

In the Uk our credit history has nothing to do whatsover with our ability to gain insurance... I can't even see how it could be relevant. I mean even if people opt to pay for insurance on a weekly basis.. and they stop paying then the Insurance company will cancel the policy with immediate effect...

deb, I'm stunned that Insurance company is taking you along for the ride.. I;m just stunned beyong thought.. at how much your paying in Insurance.. . It's imperative you start shopping around immediately for cheaper insurance ...don't pay these people another penny

In all honesty..this is the truth.... I can call my insurance company today and get myself covered to drive a rental car in your area for 2 weeks... for no more than an added extra £30 on my normal car insurance .. and I have no licence for the USA..nor any experience with NYC traffic... and it would be rental car...

@hollydolly insurance for auto coverage and homeowners in the US is a rip off in most cases.

I just got the bill for the 2008 F150 that I only carry liability on. I may cancel it because it’s $279 every six months. My 2002 Saturn isn’t far behind in cost and I have never had an accident.

Even though I carry high liability limits, the biggest reason for premium increase is age. I am well over 70 so I must pay the penalty because now all of a sudden this person who has never had an accident has become a liability risk with the simple turning of the calendar when I turn 70, eight years ago.

I have a multicar discount and I have a package discount because my home is also insured with the company that has the vehicles.

My homeowner premium has more than doubled in the 22 years. I’ve been here because while I have never had a claim, I am paying for everybody else’s claims.

Insurance premiums are also geared to where you live. Thankfully I live in a very rural agricultural county so that keeps my premiums “lower”.

I have no doubt that I could initially find a company who would give me a much cheaper cost on premiums. But what happens in my state is they rule you in with a great price for the first 12 months, when it comes to renewal time your premiums start creeping up, Since I have a personal friendship with my insurance agent, I highly doubt that I would get the same service from anybody else.

I am thinking of canceling the F150 because those one or two times a year that I might need it, it is cheaper for me to pay somebody with a pick up truck to going get what I do need. The guy that I buy my hay from delivers and stacks so I don’t need a truck for that anymore.

That means I canceled the insurance on the F350 and the insurance commission wants me to surrender the license plate because the truck is sitting and parked with no insurance so therefore I’m illegal by having a license plate on it. They have better things to do than to chase after an honest person who isn’t driving the vehicle because I have too much to lose if I would get in an accident, but they pick on the easy people instead of going after the scammers

quietly stepping down off my soapbox because this is a huge burr under my saddle blanket🤬🤬

another big burr under my saddle blanket is the fact that the software on this forum will not let me publish my reply. If the paragraph is too big I must separate it so it’s separated whether it makes sense or not.😡😡

My last term coverage ended on September 15, but I received my cards for the new term. They withdrew $1440 from my bank account on August 8th, so they were paid. Here's the letter (with sensitive info scratched out):

$1,440.00 X2 = $2,880.00 a year. Toss in gasoline an & oil change at least once depending on miles driven. Easily reaches $3,000.00 for the convenience of driving.

If there is grocery delivery service where she lives or Uber service offering this.
What is the senior Uber program?
What's an Uber senior account? An Uber senior account is designed to offer a simpler, more accessible ride experience for older adults. Benefits of Uber for seniors include: Simple mode, a streamlined app experience featuring larger text and icons, making it easier to find go-to spots and request rides.

It might be worthwhile for Deb to calculate actual need to keep her car.

Long paragraphs can be unwieldy to read, especially on phones. Before Matrix added that software tweak, a lot of posts were run-on walls of text.

People would sometimes reply with something like, "This was too difficult to read. Since you didn't bother to break it up into paragraphs I didn't bother to read it."

I think the majority of people know when to start a new paragraph..tbf

Texas law, as well as some other states allows the use of credit information for auto insurance mainly because individuals with higher credit scores are statistically less likely to file claims, making them a lower risk for the insurer.

There are other consumer reports checked by insurers. I was once denied auto coverage by one major insurer because the company could not find a record that I had maintained "uninterrupted coverage." It was finally straightened out, but the previous insurance company did not follow standard practice of reporting coverage to the necessary entities.

Deb, do you even have a credit rating. You don’t take out loans and you don’t have any credit cards.
