My insurance company slogan is, "You're in good hands." but all I've ever gotten from then was a finger. Especially last year when I filed a claim for storm damage to my house.
Deb... your money is the only thing in good hands with that bunch of thieves. I don't say that lightly, but, as one who has been raked over the coals by that bunch.
Here's the sad details. I've got a good credit rating (800+) and we bought our first Arkansas house outright. Paid $57,000 for it in 94. Had insurance through those thieves on all my vehicles, the house, and my tow truck business.(think... hook insurance, the truck, the fenced impound yard) Paid them lot's of money.
Fast forward to 2000. House has gone up in value and we've upgraded. (kitchen, bath room, A/C, windows and had the hardwood floors re-done). So, we re-did the coverage to have replacement cost. Their own comp showed similiar houses here selling for $180,000 (this was with a large deductable). Plus our then new Camaro, and the added extension of my wifes small computer store were all bundled together Needless to say, we were insurance poor but, had peace of mind.
Then in 2001 came the trouble. I'm gone and wife's home working in her store when a fire starts in the kitchen. (inspectors later determine a crack gas line as the cause). By the time the fire was put out, the entire kitchen, dining room, living room, hallway, bath room, a lot of wiring, and the roof were destroyed. Plus entire house has water and smoke damage. I breath easy knowing I'm covered.
Not so fast there say's the thieves. First off, the wife's store (which shares the electric) is now closed until wiring can be re-done and not covered by homeowners insurance. I knew that which was why I had a seperate policy for that. But, they say, because you have a breezeway between the 2 dwellings and use the house electric, that policy doesn't cover it either, Odd this was never mentioned when they came and examined the business and walked under the same breezeway and took my money for months.
Now comes cleanup and rebuild time. Can't believe it... total according to them is $66,000.

Hell, you couldn't get the kitchen and wiring done for that. But wait... it gets worse. Of the 66k, 33k goes to the cleanup. So, I'm supposed to rebuild this house with 33k? Their answer... Yep.
I fought with them, but, couldn't win. In the end, I had to scrimp and pinch every penny and by doing the bulk of the work myself, I was able to repair the house. (had to as living in the cramped RV was getting old fast). Unfortunately, I had to sacrefice the computer store...(tore it down, used the lumber and left the slab in place).
I did have one small victory. I refused to pay them 33k for cleanup. Gave them a check for 21K and they refused it. So, I cancelled the check... told them to "F" off and used that money for the new A/C some of the bathroom fixtures and the heavy entrance wiring.
Of course old "good hands" can go to hell.
