Keep receiving calls from collection agency

I haven't received any postal mail for outstanding bills. I always pay any very promptly. Most monthly bills I have set up to make an electronic withdrawal from a bank account. There are so many scams, I am dubious about this, but they are persistent - and annoying.
Absolutely persistent. You started this thread about 8 years ago according to the original post.

Oh, thank you, Mister Knight... I thought my computer dropped me on my head into a time warp! This wasn't the collection agency thread from a few months ago for sure... most of the responder names were people I didn't recognize. The same place has been after you for 8 years, Deb?! o_O

Im amazed that the sent it to a collection agency.
I'm not... My son has a Kohl's credit card. Since he is disabled and on SSI I am his Representative Payee. Last year he got his bill and it was for $15. I paid it and he did not use the card since then. One day we were at Costco and they had one of their Citi Costco credit card booths set up and if you applied you would get this big cooler bag. Since it was 100° plus outside at the time, he decided to apply. He did, and he got his cooler bag. (Which is indeed good for keeping food cold on the 12 mile drive home from the store.)

He had excellent credit history (I saw to that) and he should have been approved. The only other credit card as the one from Kohl's. But instead, he was denied for bad credit. I did the usual credit report check and I was right that it was from Kohl's. For some odd reason, there was a 39¢ charge on his card that was never paid for, and Kohl's sent it to collections. And that screwed up his credit rating.

Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to corporate greed.

Block em. Most of all of it is just like it was in the 90's.
Dinner time we got cha OK! Owe 300 G to the IRS ?
Shut off the ringer. Don't carry the phone on ya all day.
Shut it down too. Call your loved ones back later.
There was a time when we didn't need a phone most of the time.
I get mostly wasted days and wasted nights of E-mails. Blanket erases em.
Shutting off the CELL sort of goes thru all their phone numbers rapidly.
Shut down your answering voice.

Can't block them because it's a different number each time. I only have a landline phone.

They're not going to shoot a poisoned needle through the phone line. Common sense dictates that we answer every call. If the call isn't important, it's easy enough to terminate it. Reading this thread, I get the impression that there are too many deadbeats and fugitives in the forum.
I don't have collection agencies calling me and nothing to hide, but I definitely don't answer every call. Actually I don't answer most of them.

I don't usually answer my landline. Would you believe I'm getting about five calls an hour today? Maybe it's even more. That's why only a select few have my text/cell number. They don't leave a message, of course on landline.

My neighbor is that way. He gets calls constantly. My landline hardly ever rings. I guess the scammers and telemarketers are tired of not getting a response 😆😆

I don't get many calls. Mostly it's texts. Some are about my Amazon order, but I don't have an Amazon account, don't want one, and have never ordered anything from from them. I also get texts that outright say something about being from a collection agency up at the top. I'm never late paying anything, and there's nothing adverse on my credit, so I just block and delete all of those. They are just trying to provoke me into contacting them so they can get personal information. I seriously doubt they even know who I am when they send those texts.

I recently got a text about my highway toll charges. Except I don't have a car😂😂

Up in Eureka I had a landline, and I was getting over 100 scam and spam calls a week. So I went to Costco because I saw a Panasonic cordless phone in the monthly bargain book that could block up to 2,000 phone numbers, plus separate memory space or your "e-phonebook", for $40. The handsets were garbage and only lasted a few months, but the base could be used as a speaker phone by itself. I traced every unknown call, and blocked all of the scam and spam numbers.

All it took was two clicks on the base once I had ID'd a number as spam. I had that base for 5 years and never passed 1,000 blocks. One company, Midland Credit, a company I owed nothing to, that had been sued countless times for illegal debt collection practices, used that different number each time trick. I had a list of at least 50 numbers they had used.

By the way, if you are on Social Security Benefits from any of their programs (Retirement, Disability Insurance, SSI, etc.) debt collectors cannot garnish Social Security benefits. Social Security benefits are exempt funds. So even if you actually do owe someone money, the only way the can get it is if you give it them yourself.

As an example, when I was in the hospital, I had no wallet, no debit or credit card, I didn't know any of my account numbers, etc. All that information was on my computer at home. The only card I have that I could remember how to access was my bank debit card and one of my Visa credit cards. They let me pay my monthly bill over the phone after I passed all of the security questions.

There were three others that I could not pay so I called them and explained my situation and gave them my word that I would pay the bills when I was released. They seemed sympathetic and told me that was fine. I had never been late paying anything in over 20 years.

So I paid my debit and Costco visa over the phone, which were the most important cards I have, while I was still in the hospital, and I called the others every month to let them know I was still hospitalized. And when I got out, I paid three months worth of bills to get caught, just as I promised I would. What they they do? All three of them closed my accounts. After they already ruined my credit rating, one of them called me and said they were going to trash my credit.

So I told them to kiss my lily white ... Well, you get the idea.

A hospitals collection agency has been bothering me about a bill the VA is responsible for. The hospital tried billing for unnecessary things the VA won't pay for, plus I'm on social security. Let them figure it out.

I got the biggest kick out of the guy on the phone when I told him "You're already ruined my credit, so you can stuff your threats. Check my payment history, on time every month for everything since 1996. So since you screwed me and I owe you $900, remember these words... Social Security cannot be garnished."

That's who the caller ID says it is. Back in the fall I received 16 calls between Sept 25 and Oct 22 (they never called on weekends or holidays), but each call showed a different number.

Yes, I remember dealing with them myself. Really annoying and non stop for awhile.

There is a website called 800Notes. It is not a BBB Accredited Business, but even so the BBB gave them an A+ rating. In all the years I have gone there, I have never bought anything from them and was never offered anything by them. It's just a good, no frills place to look up what people have to say about calls they get. I've posted 100s of bogus phone numbers on there since I first heard of the website ages ago.

In any case, when you get an unwanted call (from any number, does not have to be an 800 number)
just search for it, and if you don't like what you see, block the number.

While I am not trying to drum up business for any company, if you have a landline, even if you have a cell phone, I highly recommend Caller ID and a phone that can block numbers and has an answering machine built in. I was in a thrift store the other day and saw one for $10. It will do your sanity a lot of good... Even if you don't have a phone that can block numbers, even a notebook or text file with a list of unwanted calls in it is handy. But at minimum, Caller ID is a good investment. If you qualify for Universal Lifeline, Caller ID is sometimes included as a standard feature. (And ya cain't beat FREE!)

Deb, a Digitone would help you so much! I am quoting from an old post of mine and it is:

"Those of you with a land line could get a blocking device like I have. I love it!!!!! It is a Digitone and it will block up to 1000 callers. This is the link to the one I have: https://digitone.com/
You won't regret it. It has blocked so many telemarketers now, most of them have finally given up. It is worth every penny to me!"

The Digitone will block by name or number. If you receive a call from the same name each time but a different number, you can hit the block my name button and it won't ring again from them. That's what I do and I LOVE IT. I am still using this and they have given up on me. My Digitone doesn't even have to block them now because they don't call and I LOVE that too!!!!!
