Keeping my fingers crossed on next Vet visit....

Almost a year ago, my daughter gave us her great pyrenees dog that she adopted (her 3rd floor apartment was too small).

A month after that, we took our dog to the vet, and it turned out to be the only vet visit since he was a puppy. Anyways, we were shocked that we found our poor dog had a severe case of heartworms and had to do the extreme 'fast' treatment for them immediately (otherwise he was not expected to last a year). So we got our dog his treatments and the poor dog had to contend with the 2 very painful shots, and to be kept sedated and quiet for 2 months...no physical activities, no moving around until his system absorbs the remains of the dead heartworms.

Thankfully, today he is doing very well; acting more like the pyrenees breed and is very loving, playful, and is a great dog. It looks like he will live another 10 to 12+ years (he is 4 years old now) The next vet visit is next week, and will be the first time that they can confirm that his heartworm infestation is gone. I'm expecting to hear that. Anyhow, I'll let everyone know how it came back. I'm very proud of our dog.

Update: Very good news, our dog's harsh medical treatment is over.......He had that bloodtest, and indeed, he is free of heart worms (or negative for heartworms on the test), and the vet gave him a clean bill of health. Also, he gained 15 pounds in the last 6 months, and is now nearing the typical size and weight of a pyrenees.

If we hadn't started the fast heartworm treatment 6 months ago, he wouldn't have lived long enough to get that steak and egg we're giving him in celebration this weekend.

Thanks for the update, happy to know he's healthy again.

I'm so glad your dog is doing well!

My friend had a great Pyrenees for his farm, but she decided to move down the road to his parents farm & stayed there. When she got old, they got another to keep her company & also for her to train the pup.

Now my neighbor has one for his goats/chickens to keep the coyotes away. This dog is a big sweetheart to be around. They are wonderful animals.

Just wanted to say, thanks for the warm wishes. Shiner, our dog, is doing well and now demands his attention and toys. Now the fun begins for us....we've never had a dog over 30 lbs. before, but now its fun to learn to walk a 91 lbs. dog. Thankfully Shiner is very well behaved.

Lilac, you are correct....They are wonderful animals.
