Keeping Your Pride and Big Corporate

I WAS working for big corporate. But there's that little thing when they hire you..."at will". They try to make it sound like it's all good. That they can fire you at any time for any reason...but what they consider an equal consideration...that you are free to quit at any time. Oh yayyy for them.

The kicker is that they can start the process of termination and then one day can you from computer data. No consideration to personal hardship or human error...just the big corporate rules, you aren't a human, only an employee number. Right down to a mid manager no one can stand following me to my locker.

She took a bit too much pleasure in shredding my aprons. Then started nit picking as I emptied my locker..." Is that tape yours? That screw driver? Box cutter? Permanent marker? Work gloves?". Yes they are now in my bag and they are now MINE beeyatch.

While she was happily shredding I got out the door, wished goodbye to a co-worker and...

Sigh, hey they cut hours down to maybe fourteen a week...I can do better than that, but three years and...aye I'll do better. But still not the happiest afternoon.

You got the sack today? I'm so sorry! That's never a good feeling, even if you were wanting to leave the job anyway. It does seem like some places are heartless about letting people go and people have bills to pay and families to feed. I have a friend whoes retired hubby worked for Home Depot and he was fired for a reason that I'm not sure is true. What do you think? He was always complaining (and he is a talker just like my husband) that the employees were not allowed to talk to each other , unless it was work related, and he was warned about it several times. He said they had an office or a catwalk or something up high (I forget what) and the bosses would go up there and watch him, catch him talking and then write him up. When I'm in any store I see the employees talking to each other all the time. I know my husband would last about 2 minutes on a job where he couldn't talk. Do you think this is a true story? I guess it doesn't matter but it's something I've wondered about ever since I heard it.

Fureverywhere, I'm so sorry -- that must have felt like a kick in the teeth. Did you have any warning at all or see it coming? Nowdays nobody cares about their employees anymore. Sending you a hug and Bonnie sends a big fat kiss.

I believe you could get fired for talking, probably can get fired for nothing at all if somebody has it in for you. It started when they hired somebody from outside for the department. A complete corporate tool...you know those kind of people who you never see smile, never have normal conversation, they say he was going through a divorce who knows.

When he first started I was a cashier. The first time I knew of his existence he had sent someone to tell me corporate policy says no reading at the register even if you haven't had a customer in two hours. The next time he appeared he had this great idea that cashiers could water plants too. I suppose when they started refusing that idea went under.

Then one day mysteriously someone was sent to tell me I could only be in my department and not be a cashier anymore. That meant my hours were cut and...well I guess that would keep me from reading at the register. Then a few months later someone was sent over by...guess who...to tell me stretch pants aren't corporate policy.

Maybe they aren't except that everyone from the greeter to the loading dock people wear skin tight stretch pants. But I was sent home to change. When I complained to HR she said they couldn't send home EVERYBODY that violates the dress code. You notice he didn't have a problem with the twenty somethings being dressed like that.

There was a manager that I had befriended long before. She was the buffer against this clown. She had to go one leave for a knee injury. I knew that once she was gone I would be right in the cross hairs, yup within a week. Hey karma bites, the machine will spit them all out too eventually. Still you give them several years and POOF you're out...bastards

Sorry to hear that Fureverywhere. I've been unjustly fired in the past, but it was a union job and I was able to get my job back with backpay and full reinstatement of benefits, etc. You're right, those other guy's days are numbered too, just a matter of time. Consider it fate, maybe it was meant to happen so you can be happier and move onto something you enjoy more with nicer folks to work with. Good luck. :girl_hug:

Thank you for the kind words everybody. You got it right exactly SB, I'm going to take it as the nudge I needed to find something less soul sucking. I'm also writing a proposal for the township as a side gig. We have a bunch of sad, boring park benches in town. I can come up with full sketches of different themes for each one. Even if it's for free it gets my art out there in public.

I'd like to see myself like Banksy. Keeping myself basically anonymous but people recognizing my style. Of course he's taken on whole cities. I'm happy with just local stuff, other towns perhaps. Have to find paying labor too of course, but important to have side hobbies to give our lives meaning.

You're lucky to be so talented, the park benches sounds like a cool project/hobby. You sound like a strong lady with a positive attitude, I'm sure you'll find something that's more fulfilling in the way of employment.

SeaBreeze said it perfectly so I'm stealing her words. I LOVE the idea about the park benches. We want to see pictures of course. And again I'll say, I'm so sorry for all the crap you went though at work, but I think you'll move on to something, as you said "less soul sucking".
