Kent State massacre: The shootings on a college campus 50 years ago changed the country

I was a student in high school when those shootings occurred, and can well remember the commotion that they caused. "What next?" proclaimed some student posters erected in my school. While the age is often associated with love, peace, and the general "hippie" vibe, the article's description of "toxic waters coming together" at Kent State was an apt one...

Utterly sickening!

Families of those killed and injured in the massacre, should have gone after each shooter one by one, outside of the court system.

An eye for an eye.

I hope a special place awaits those who used innocent students for target practice that day, and an even more special place for Frank J. Battisti. RIH!

At the time there were many, many people who thought those "stupid hippie kids" deserved what they got. We forget there was enormous criticism of the youth who were protesting the Vietnam War.

It was the first "war that wasn't really a war" because Congress never authorized it, although military action was approved. In the Korean war, the US headed a UN force so the circumstances were considered different.

Thus Vietnam became the first US overseas conflict that raised the question of "why are American troops dying in a conflict that has never threatened the US?"

Nixon ran on the platform of "Law and Order" in 1968 (and won easily over Humphrey), as the anti-war and racial riots created what many citizens considered a threatening time for America.

Interestingly, VP Spiro Agnew, a lawyer, admitted soon after the Kent State Massacre that Kent State was, in fact, what he would consider "murder - not premeditated, but a lesser charge of what has to be called murder,"* in an interview with David Frost.

*I'm paraphrasing Agnew's statement, FYI

I was working at a newspaper when this came over the teletype machine. If I remember correctly, the additional outrage was spurred on when the current commander-in-chief made moves that would escalate the conflict at a time when so many did indeed wondered "What the hell are we dying for."

Keep this in memory when we hear Trump calls on the military to deal with peaceful protests knowing that was the National Guard at Kent State. The massacre of women and children at Waco was done by a democrat woman AG Janet Reno under democrat president Bill Clinton. No one is innocent.

Four facts of life that were apparently not taught to the students:

1) You don't tug on Superman's cape.
2) You don't p___ into the wind.
3) You don't pull the mask off the ol' Lone Ranger, and
4) You never, ever throw rocks at people who are carrying shootin' irons.

I blame their parents.

Well, when rifles are handed out to a group of trigger-happy, weekend warrior imbeciles who can't wait to kick some ass, the results are predictable.

I don't know what goes on in other states, but in this state when it's said troops are being deployed overseas- Middle East, etc.- the Guard is who they're referring to. Your disgusting 'definition' is way out of line.
