Kid that mowed my lawn last year, lost access to mower

My new lawn guy usually comes on Thursday and he always calls to let me know. This week I waited and he didn't come Thursday. Yesterday (Friday) I thought he'd surely come. It got to be 7 pm and he hadn't called so I went to bed. At around 7:15 my phone rang and it was him saying he was coming right over. I had to get up and get dressed, but at least my lawn was attended to.

Other than giving him a check (which you could leave under the doormat), what interaction do you have with your lawn guy when he comes over?

Other than the rare occasions when I have a specific request, I don't generally interact with my gardener a lot. We greet each other if I happen to be outside when he's working here, but I pretty much leave him to his work.

We chit-chat a minute or two when he rings the doorbell.
