Not me,it`s my son. Although I did have one when I was 15. Anyway,he is working out of town and called me last night in obvious pain. Had no idea what could be wrong. He described what was going on and I told him it sounded like a kidney stone. I told him to head to the ER. My grandson has started working for him so he and the head guy took him to the ER. Said they had a heck of a time getting him out of the truck as he was just curled in a ball. Anyway,they got him in there,they did blood work and a CT scan and yes,it`s a kidney stone,a huge one (8-9 mm) They said he will never be able to pass it. Sooo,he came back home today and is now searching for a urologist. I see that Applecruncer mentions having the procedure done that breaks it up but apparently not many urologists in our area do it-like just one. I`m wondering why that is. Anyone else have any experience with these?

(btw I forgot to mention I had CT scan (VERY expensive saw the paperwork from insurance) - regular x-ray will not always detect them.)

In the past they had to do surgery to physically remove these larger stones, but now there are some more advanced options such as extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy. This treatment entails being submerged in a tub of water where sound waves traveling through the liquid shatter the stones. They then pass as gravel through your urine in a few days or weeks.

I had a CT scan when they suspected a kidney stone about 12 or so years ago and it was $4,400.00. Today I can only imagine what one would cost. Guess I will hear what it costs though-my son found out today that his medical insurance was suspended as of March 31st as he was working out of state. He has been working out of state since last summer! Why now? And why was he not notified? He has only worked for one company. I hope this was an error. If not,he is going to have one heck of a bill to pay from last night. And will have to wait until after tomorrow to see a urologist. They say his insurance reinstates on Friday,the 1st.
 
I had a big kidney stone, too big to pass. The first lithotripsy didn't even crack it. The second one two weeks later split it into several pieces, all too big to pass. The third one, also two weeks later, smashed the pieces and I was able to pass the pieces. The worst part was the stent I had in after each one. Except for a big bruise on my back from the first litho, it wasn't a bad experience. Now, however, I'm reading that lithotripsies might lead to heart problems. Oh, great.

Oh, and mine wasn't in water. I was on a gel-filled mattress. They were all out-patient procedures at the hospital.
 
Spent three days in hospital just trying to pass one several years ago. I can tell you, they're are extremely painful to try and pass.
