Sorry to bring this up again, but today's paper had a big front page article about the number of shootings by children, some as young as 6, because they got their hands on guns that
were not locked up. Out of about 150 shootings, the article says that only 4 of the adult owners of the guns had been charged. In one mass shooting in Kentucky, the kid's stepfather was not charged, and even got his gun back.
The article says many people leave their guns unsecured because they feel the need to get their hands on the guns quickly. But there are safes where the guns could be secured, which can be opened in 3 seconds.
I wonder if facing a stiff sentence would "encourage" some of these idiots to make sure their guns are locked up. My first thought was that it probably wouldn't make any difference; if the threat of their child shooting them, or killing themselves, is not enough to convince them, why would a potential prison sentence matter? But then I continued reading, and it points out
that some of these guns were taken from neighbors' homes. The neighbor might have no kids, so that threat wouldn't matter to them.
It's hard to imagine that even after all the shootings by children and teenagers, people can still be so stupid.
