Killer dogs and killing dogs

Last night at 4:30 am I was awakened by three gunshots. They sounded like shotgun rounds. Today my farmer neighbor called and told me that four huge dogs had packed up and had two of his cows cornered. The dogs were taking turns attacking and had nearly torn an ear off one of the cows. He killed one of the dogs and tried to kill the others but of course the other three ran off. He called the sheriff (who wrote a report) and the vet who sewed the cows ear up and examined the deceased dog. The vet said the dog appeared to be a greyhound and mastiff hybrid.

This is a rural area and there are lots of new people around here who think now they live in the country they need to get big dogs but who are really irresponsible dog owners and really shouldn't be allowed to own a dog. Seems these anti-social types get killer dogs as a status symbol and let them run.

I'm not going out on my place without a weapon from now on and most of us long time residents in this area have agreed that any dog who roams here will be a dead dog if it shows the slightest aggression. When I was a boy, most of the farmers simply shot any dog that showed up on their farm....maybe we are getting back to that.

Having lived in rural locations with those who didn’t respect their fellow neighbours, I totally understand what you’re saying.

I think danger dogs are the new guns. Certainly a lethal weapon belonging to inadequate types who think it gives them a hard image. Until of course their dogs kill a child or a helpless animal. Then how hard do they feel? Fools.

It’s sad that humans made man’s best friend to be something that needs shooting. Very sad

We had a pack of wild dogs in two townships south of me who was killing chickens, sheep & cattle one spring many years ago. Not sure how the farmers figured it out, but they found the pack & killed all of them what they said were mongrels.

I don't blame anyone for protecting their animals or themselves in these situations. When I was little, I remember being told never to let your dog run loose in the country because they'd get shot on sight.

@Llynn, I wouldn't call the ones here anti-social, just ignorant to the ways of rural life. Some think it's OK to let them run at large & then wonder how they got hit by cars or aren't seen again.

We just had a pack of coyotes move back into the area within the last few weeks. We hear them at night & whenever there are sirens. We have a mix of farm animals in our area. I go out at night with our young pup since it started.

I had a pack run through here one day when I was sitting on the back porch. One stopped at the end of the porch and just stared at me. It was pretty creepy. I wished I had a gun out there with me when that happened.
