A company owned by King Vajiralongkorn has been given a state contract to produce 26 million doses of the Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine

A Thai billionaire is facing 15 years in prison under a law against insulting the monarchy after he asked if the king was personally profiting from the pandemic. The government is using the lèse-majesté law to prosecute Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, an opposition politician and businessman, after he raised questions about a state contract given to a company owned by King Vajiralongkorn to produce millions of doses of the Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine.

In a live broadcast on Facebook, Mr Thanathorn questioned the decision to buy 26 million doses. The vaccine will be manufactured by Siam Bioscience, one of many companies owned by the king, which makes him one of the richest monarchs. Source: The Times

As far as I'm concerned, there is no place for monarchy in today's day and age.

Should be off with their heads for all of them.

I pull no punches when it comes to my abhorrence when it comes to royalty.

Them being portrayed as being better than everyone else, ugh. Gag me with a spoon.

They're all as corrupt and crooked as the best, and they're all fake, too.

HBO aired a documentary years ago titled "The Ganja Queen" about a young woman convicted of smuggling mamajuana. After an appeal failed to go in her favor she was sentenced to 20 years. The key here is in Thailand after you appeal is hear 100% of all related documentation is destroyed. Also, two Australian were executed there for drug smuggling. You can be beaten by the police on site if you drop a cigarette on the sidewalk.

I didn't realize it was so oppressive, FM.

I don't think "monarchy' is the right term for Thailand. It's more of a Hitler type totalitarian regime. You have to wonder how much this 'monarch' loves his nation, since he spend most of his life, as king, living in Germany. It was only when unrest in Thailand got out of hand did he even bother to visit, and then live in the country.

The Ganga Queen took place in Indonesia, not Thailand.

Typical kingly behavior. It's called emoluments (a salary, fee or profit from employment or office. It's a popular path to wealth and power.

I've heard from a few people I know who have been there, that it is really beautiful. But I wouldn't line his pockets either.
One of my nieces has lived there for several years at a time (working for NGO health entities). She loves it there, but says poverty and corruption are serious problems. Prostitution is so rampant, including child prostitution, that westerners go there for sex vacations (ugh).

I love their food. The country is a very colorful county all throughout their culture. Most of SE Asia is run by dictators. Asian countries don't seem to succeed in establishing democracies. Then there is China that crushes democracies. Taiwan is next.
