Hi everyone,

Have you done volunteer work that later led to paid work, full or part-time? Or know anyone who has?

If so, would you or they be willing to talk with me? I'm writing an article for a national magazine on how volunteering can help older adults restart or advance a career, or at least get some paid work.

Many thanks!

David

I trained Mums in the UK to be volunteer classroom helpers, then later on I ran courses at my school so they could get trained as classroom assistants, so yes some of them did get paid work. I cannot put you in touch with these folks though as it is several years ago now and I am back in Canada but will help you if I can with info.

Good luck with your article

Sounds like fine work, Jeannine, and could've been great for the article, though I probably need to stick to stateside stories. Thanks for the response and encouragement.

1970's, I became part of a volunteer fire department in a small town. The Fire Chief talked me into dispatching part time for the fire/police departments. I spent a couple years working weekend nights running the emergency services phones and radio communications. Then, the Police Chief talked me into moving from the radio room to patrol duty. I'd work my regular job 10 hours/day 5 days/week. Then, would work 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday night and Saturday night either at dispatch or on the street in a patrol car. The dispatch and patrol work were paid positions.

More recently, I was asked to give the graduation address for a group of youth who had completed a technical school. Was then asked to become a substitute teacher for the program. Before I could do any teaching, got called back to work for a few months. Now that I am fully retired, will probably think about taking them up on the offer to do some substitute teaching.

Those sound like just the kind of stories we're looking for, Grumpy. I've PM'd you to see if we might arrange a time to talk.

Thanks! And please, everyone, keep them coming.
