We lived in the same small town as Koko (Woodside,CA) She was very much a part of our community,although she was never brought into town. They did have a Chimpanzee there though that they used to bring to town all the time. Now,after some of the things I`ve heard about Chimps,I would have felt more comfortable with my kids being around Koko!

I remember that incident several yrs ago when the woman Charla Nash was viciously attacked by a chimp. Horrific.

Oprah visited Charla at the Cleveland Clinic. I gasped, almost fell off my chair.

Made me think differently about chimps....and primates in general.

Once a chimp reaches puberty, they change and can become unpredictable and violent. Actor-chimps are prepubescent.

Studies have shown that we're much more closely related to the gorillas than we thought. The closest are chimps, orangs and bonobos, followed closely by gorillas. I don't know how anyone who has watched the late Washoe the chimp (who was the first primate to learn ASL and knew and used about 350 signs) or Koko interact with humans can doubt how close we actually are.
