We celebrate by NOT working. Most state and federal agencies are closed. Retail establishments remain open. Many people have a day off from work, excpet for essential services.
Sometimes it's a cookout & sometimes we end up working. Not sure who is working & who is off this year. Depending on the weather, it could be the beginning of cleaning up the yard/garden for fall & a bonfire at the end of the day. No matter what, it will be the last hurrah of the summer.
I remember school days beginning the week following the American Labor Day. Watching Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy show was the highlight before life grounding to a halt for 10 months of amazing studies but the remaining 50% of the time, hating being stuck in them buildings. Yuck!
Just after we left for last contract, rules were changing and schools were going to begin mid-August. Glad, we're all out if that nightmare called schools. LOL!
Had the chance to homeschool munchkins that was fun and they both got highers. Ended up passing 3 years in one. It was the advanced courses, I taught them.
My parents always had a clam steam on Labor Day. I didn't eat them, but I would eat the accompaniments - corn on the cob, steamed potatoes and chicken.
