Lactose Intolerant discovery.

The last 4-5 years I found I was having bowel problems, blamed it on everything I could think of. Coffee, diet, activity or lack of it, TV choices, anything I could think of. What I did discover and seems to be working is that I have become 'Lactose Intolerant'. I had been gouging on cottage cheese, cheese, half n half in my coffee or oatmeal and yogurt. I had grown up on a farm where milk was the drink of choice during my formative years. Never connected the problems up.

After a discussion with wife, she suggested that now in my senior years I could be LI. Said she had read that many seniors have that type of issue. I gave up all dairy products, except real butter. Found that it solved my issue and I'm returning to my former self. I worried that butter would be next but according to the 'real' web, butter has just a minute amount of lactose and usually will not bother me. I found that is the case, so I can still have melted butter on my baked sweet potatoes. I do cook with olive oil instead.

I hope the search is over now since I have many other worries to take up my obsessive thoughts.

A country farm kid myself, I always loved dairy products, but just giving them up is a major challenge.
I did discover this some years back .... wonderful for those with lactose issues. It's found in grocery stores everywhere.

Bonnie, did try that but found that there is less carbs, or so the label says in GV non dairy powdered cream. Cheaper too, started using that, gives my coffee a little more body. The GV works great in my oatmeal.

Those of us who frequent Walmart daily know that 'GV' stands for 'Great Value' Wally's brand. You can buy a 55 gallon drum of 'GV' ground coffee for pennies. The code 'GV' is dominant on my sales receipt.

I use non-dairy dry creamer. They have sugar free too. I have lactose issues periodically. I switched to Almond & Soy milks. I can still eat a little regular ice cream now and then. Otherwise Dillons has a sugar free/lactose free ice cream that's pretty good. I don't seem to have any problem with cheese. Unless I eat too much.

I've known I am lactose intolerant for the last 30 years. I had the bloating/stomach problems so bad that I couldn't leave the house for 3 years. I thought it was I.B.S., but it cleared up when I dropped dairy.

If I accidentally eat dairy hidden in some food, I get asthma attacks.

You should be able to sometimes eat some hard cheeses {aged swiss, extra sharp cheddar, gouda} without problems. Some kinds of yogurt can be tolerated, as well as Keifer. Clarified butter is also something you might be able to eat.

I've switched to coconut products~milk, cream, and oil. There are products available, but you need to search for them.
Most restaurants offer allergy lists of their food on their websites. There are plenty of foods available, you just need to inform yourself.
It's way better than being ill and feeling awful.

Most people are lactose intolerant to some degree. Many have such mild symptoms, they go unnoticed, so milk products are not a problem.
By the time we are too old to breastfeed, many of us have lost the enzymes needed to metabolize milk. The problems are thought to be caused by two ingredients in milk - Lactose & Casein. Cow's milk is very high in Casein, which is a thick substance needed to form the large bones in cows & other large animals. Some people also have a problem digesting Lactose - the sugar in milk.
