Lamar Odom was a star at URI before going pro after one year!

His Rhode Island connection is not something I am particularly proud of after his recent binge on coke and other sexual enhancing drugs at a brothel in Vegas where he spent 75K over a period of days. What looks like a tragic end to his life is sad but not unexpected. Further, he could barely read or write and couldn't pass the entrance exam at URI, but it was finessed to get him in because the University wanted a big name in college basketball. It seems that he only had to write a paragraph to pass and the writing was coached by the coach. Shameful behavior on all involved...

Unlike LeBron James, who was no genius in high school by no means, but grew up very quickly going from high school directly into the NBA. LeBron can thank his agent for teaching him how to use and spend his money wisely, otherwise, he may have ended up like so may other athletes by being penniless at the end of their career. In my book, LeBron is a success story. He was a kid that went from having nothing to basically hitting the lottery at 18 signing a 90 million dollar, 7 year contract with Nike, even before being drafted by the Cavaliers out of high school. Thus far in his career, he has earned $450,000,000.00. That's a lot of zeros.

I think what always impressed me about LeBron is how much he has given back to the community where he grew up and how much he gave back to the community while in Miami and still does. He is a philanthropist while still maintaining his success in the NBA. I can't remember ever reading anything about drugs connected to LeBron, although he has had a few escapades with a supposed mistress that the paparazzi had no problem making public.

One of our other college, PC, also pushed the basketball angle with mixed results as one of their former stars just died of a drug overdose...

I am to some degree a Boston Celtics fan, but not as much as in the past. I remember when Len Bias was drafted number 2 by the Celtics and two days later fell over dead from a heart attack brought on by a Cocaine o/d. On ESPN, the commentator (forget his name), called him the greatest player to have never played the game. I watched Lenny play in a number of games when he was at Maryland. If I was to compare Bias to James, I would say that James was more talented, but my favorite player to watch was Dr. J or Julius Erving. I flew him from New York to Los Angeles to watch his old team play in a playoff game versus the Lakers. That was back in the day when we could leave the cockpit and I invited him into the cockpit for about 5 minutes. He was like a kid in a candy store. He loved sitting up front in the cockpit. I wanted to talk basketball and he wanted to know all about our instruments. Just a real nice man and very talented on the court.

Oldman, since you were talking about LeBron James, just a few comments…
His mother Gloria James became pregnant with him when she was 16, and his bio father Anthony McClelland abandoned her – and to this day has never met LeBron. In 2002 after that huge ($90M) contract was signed, McClelland resurfaced and tried to contact LeBron  but his efforts were futile. :D In 2014 LeBron publicly thanked his father for not being in his life.

As far as this Lamar Odom situation that has been all over the news, well, I hope he recovers but really nothing else to say about it.

I lived in Akron when I went to college at Kent State, so I am familiar with the area where his high school was. Where he lived was a different story. I think he moved more times than a moving van during his growing years. James grew up having a hard life and with a mother who really didn't give a rat's ass about her kids. Oh, she loved them, but doing for them seemed to be an impossibility for her. Father was in jail and Mom was on welfare after losing jobs. James did most of the hard work and got to where he is today through dedicating himself to being a better person and a success. Of course, like many other great players before him, James had a mentor along the way when he began playing Pee Wee football. There is a lot to his story and if anyone likes to read rags to riches types stories, LeBron James would fit that category to a 'T'.

I guess that you can tell that I have read his bio.

This pos celebrity might need a kidney transplant now.

As far as I am concern he goes to the very bottom of any list. He is reckless and/or suicidal and shouldn't even be in consideration at this point. Unless they have a kidney headed to the ground with it's owner NOTHING should be done to bump this clown up the list. Until he is rehabbed off drugs and they are sure he is not suicidal NO kidney for him.
