Landline Phone Woes

No dial tone on landline. I go the NID box with a working phone. The rule of thumb is that if you hear a dial tone, the trouble is with the inside wiring. If you do not hear a dial tone, the trouble is outside the phone.

There are two hookups inside the box, one for the landline and the other for the dedicated DSL used as a backup for Internet connection. Not sure which is which.

One of them yields no sound which I assume is the DSL hookup. On the other one, there is no dial tone but a phone rings and the usual robot lady says that she’s sorry but the no. you dialed cannot be reached, please try again. Does the robot response equate with a dial tone, and I can assume that the trouble is outside the house?





So what’s up here?
 

Just wondering if you have more than one phone in the house...and if you checked that all of them are hung up. The message could be from an open line (cat / dog /kid knocked phone off and pushed some numbers???)
