Language is fun. Depending on where you live you might use a different word for the same thing.

Examples:
Boot / Trunk
Soda / Pop / Coke

It will be interesting to see what others will add to the list.

Asphalt: Bitumen
Ballpoint Pen: Biro
Sidewalk: Footpath
Trash bin: Wheelie Bin
Idiot/Clown: Wally

"Barbecue": us = a method of cooking, or where you go to eat it; locals = meat with sauce.

Doughnuts with jelly filling: us = "jelly doughnuts;" locals = "bismarcks."

Carbonated beverage: us = "soda;" locals = "pop."

that's only a start!!

Even different areas of the same country...

Southern USA: “Hey Lady” ( respectful greeting)
Northern USA: “Hey, Lady” (derogatory greeting )

and another one: "peachy." In some areas it means "couldn't be better" and in other areas it means "couldn't be much worse."

Strangely enough I just saw a post on Facebook with terms that differ around the United States. Unfortunately I can't find the original source but it had some cool images of colored areas where the terms were used most. Here are what they had that you didn't.

Fireflies / Lightning bugs
Garage sale / Yard sale / Tag sale /Rummage sale
You guys / Y'all
Tennis shoes / Sneakers / (outside US Trainers)
Semi or Semi truck / Eighteen-wheeler / Tractor trailer
Garbage can / Trash can
Drinking fountain / Water fountain / Bubbler

I read somewhere that "bless you heart" was nice, but if someone says "Bless her/his little heart" they were going to talk trash about them.

The way I initially heard it in the northeast, it's a compliment, but later in the south was told it's a putdown.

Meaning is conveyed with tone of voice and facial expression. Southerners can do it and you won't even know you've been insulted until you get home and think about it. It's a talent.

Yup, I do know Southerners have a way. My father was like that. No matter how long he lived in other parts of the country, he never lost his "dry wit."

The one that tripped me up was what do you call those long sandwiches.. it occurred to me I'd never called them anything because for some reason I'd never even seen one til a few years ago.
