Lawn Guy Ruined My Trimmer

I have a Black and Decker string trimmer, but there wasn't much cord showing. I couldn't pull any more out and I didn't have enough hand strength to unscew the center nut. When my lawn guy came yesterday, I showed it to him. It took him a few tries to get the nut loose, but then he proceeded to pull all the cord out and threw it on the ground in a big tangle. I didn't ask him to pull the cord out, just loosen the nut. Why would he have done that?

It could very well be a reverse thread

You were tightening it

Also, if the trimmer still contains plenty of trim line, usually just bumping the bottom of the trimmer, while it's running, will release more trim line
 

I simply cant answer what would be going on in someone elses's mind. In my experience professional landscape people always bring and use their own equipment. I'm surprised he would even look at your equipment let alone try to fix it. Now that he has screwed it up, you will probably have to fix it yourself. I used to own one of these things. Rewinding the spool and securing the line should not be that big a problem. I'm sure there are tons of YouTube videos that show how to do this. Meanwhile good luck!🍀🌷

As to why ? We'd have to ask him.

Meanwhile that tangled mess more than likely would not have unwound or pulled out easily to be useable. Or while spinning be bumped on the ground like many are to release more line. I've had that happen so the remedy I used was to buy a new spool. They don't cost much. Or you could try to rewind the line to try to save a few bucks.

The lawn guy probably did you a favor by getting rid of that old line. As others have suggested, get some new line and replace it with new, It's just a 5 minute task on most trimmers, and the owners manual should tell you everything you need to do. If you don't have the manual, you can probably download it from the B&D website.

He did that because the line was either tangled or it was incorrectly installed.

No need to tip him, just say thanks.
 
If it's that old, it's doubtful that you will find any documentation on that make/model. You might ask your lawn man...politely...to show you how to install new line, the next time you have him there....or buy a new trimmer, and add this thing to your "antique" sales.

Goodness, I have thrown away more than I remember in that time, hate the things, and left them in a box at my gate, free to take away. Now use petrol strimmers and carry 500-metre heavy-duty spools. In fact, there is a brand new unopened expensive petrol strimmer in the garage, must be getting on for 10 years old, and I expect it will still be there when I bite the dust.
Still no help for you, for which I apologise and suspect as another poster posted, a cheap part and a small amount of new strimming cord may fix yours, and a friend of course.
 
It's common for the string to get trapped under other loops of string which requires opening it up and re-doing it. Use channel lock pliers to loosen the spool. There should be an arrow on the spool itself showing which way to wrap the line. You stick one end of the line in the empty spool's little hole and wrap.

Yes, the lawn guy was able to get it open, but he went overboard pulling out the line.

Corded????.....Toss it....nothing more aggravating than having to play with a long electric cord while trying to do some lawn work. If you don't want to fool with gas, there are any number of battery powered trimmers available at a fairly low price. In addition to a couple of Stihl trimmers, I have a 'Hart' brand battery powered trimmer that I picked up at Walmart. It's real handy if I just want to do some quick trimming, and it runs for about an hour before the battery needs a recharge.
 
I just had the occasion to go out because I had to send in my electric meter reading. The lawn guy did a terrible job - it looks like he missed several strips and he didn't get anywhere near the sidewalk or driveway. I saw him using his trimmer, but it was near the road. Screwed again!
 
He had a new mower - maybe he isn't used to it yet, but I sent him a message indicating that I was disappointed in his last job. He hasn't replied yet, but it is the weekend.

This is how it looks. In the first photo, it's may be difficult to tell, but there are still a lot of dandelions and long grass there. Looks like he did the lawn on the other side of the tree, but forget to do between the tree and driveway. In the second photo looks like he went along the edge of the flower bed and that's all he did in the that area.

My wife would never want to look at a lot of brown spots { dead grass} & all those weeds. She would buy something like this for me to make sure our lawn was picture perfect.

Why don't you get in touch with him and text him the photos that you posted here?

Perhaps he accidentally overlooked a few areas without intending to cheat you or do a lousy job. I'd give him the chance to make it right before moving on to another lawn service.

We had a problem with the gates our handyman made just a few weeks ago. Sent him photos and within a week he came back, apologized, and fixed everything.
 
That wasn't an oversight, he left without finishing. I'd ask "Was it something I said?"

But that's me.

That guy's charging you a cut rate. He may also be giving you cut-rate service, but the kinder and more appreciative you are, the more you'll get from him as time goes on.

But I won't be surprised if he doesn't come back. And you're gonna have a real hard time finding someone else who will mow and trim your yard for what he's charging you.
