The version of "LITB" we see in reruns isn't how it was first conceived. The pilot for the series first aired as a segment of "Studio 57" and was entitled "It's a Small World". It was revived with a whole new cast the exceptions being Jerry Mathers and Barbara Billingsley which is the series we see now. More on "It's a Small World" here:

My parents didn't watch it so we didn't watch it, but years later when I was the parent I got to watch all the re-runs.
I don't love it quite as much as The Andy Griffith show but it comes close. Always warm and funny.

I watched that early pilot a few years ago and cringed at the way June's role was written as a bit of a bimbo then. I love June in all the regular shows, never a push over and often seen to be smarter than Ward about some things.
