Lesson I Learned After Turning 60

A lesson I wish I had learned much earlier is that you can't convince someone to like you.

A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still. (or woman)

My sons sprung a surprise birthday present on me when I turned 60., it was the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb. I always said I would love to do it but was too scared until then. It was the most fantastic time, and we had great photos taken. My lesson after turning 60 was to be adventurous and try something new, it can only make you feel better about yourself.

Learning to live without other people is very useful. There are too many people who can't think for themselves but rely on to make decisions for them.

I read that from a different perspective; I had a hard time adjusting to life without my kids. And it felt like all 3 of them left home all at once (still does when I reflect) and I wondered what I did to make them want to leave.

I was a single dad, so when they left, I was suddenly alone. It felt weird and uncomfortable...and I had a light-bulb moment, because I realized that's probably how moms feel, only worse, maybe, right? Then, I started collecting stray cats, and the whole cat-lady thing started making sense.

Man, that was a strange time. Kind of Twighlight Zone-ish for a while.

I learned: Just because I know or think something, I do NOT have to say it. Sometimes, silence is golden.

(sigh) I wish I knew that.

You raised them right that's what you did.

Our job as parents is to raise kids capable of independence, and the confidence to exercise that independence.

Yes, similar. These days I am getting much better at just going with the flow.

As we realize our days are numbered we are better able to enjoy our life if we choose our day by day
enjoyment activities wisely - we spend a lot of time reading, which is what we always said we wanted
to do if we had enough time. Life is good.
