Let's talk about wine

Hi everyone,

I’m passionate about the Mediterranean lifestyle — good food, balance, and enjoying life slowly. For me, that has always included healthy eating and an appreciation for wine, especially since wine is traditionally part of many Mediterranean cultures.

I’m far from an expert, but I grew up around it: my grandparents had vines, and every year we harvested the grapes, crushed them by foot, and made our own wine at home. Those memories shaped my love for it.

I mostly know Spanish wines, and while I understand wine should always be enjoyed in moderation, there is research suggesting that moderate consumption of red wine can have potential benefits. For example, several observational studies have associated moderate wine intake with cardiovascular well-being and a lower incidence of certain age-related conditions, and some research highlights compounds like polyphenols and resveratrol as contributors to these effects.
Of course, these findings don’t mean wine is “healthy” for everyone, and they come with clear caveats — but they are interesting insights from nutritional and epidemiological studies.

Today I’d like to share a bottle I recommend: Ramón Bilbao Crianza. Today I've chosen this to accompany my dinner.
It’s a classic Rioja with a smooth profile — typically showing notes of ripe red fruit, subtle spices, and a balanced touch of oak. It’s approachable, versatile with food, and a great example of the style without being too heavy.

I’d love to hear from the rest of you:
What wines do you enjoy?
Whether they’re from your region, hidden gems, or everyday favorites, I’m here to learn from all of you.

Looking forward to your recommendations! 🍷

And remember, the most important thing isn't the quality of the wine... it's good company and good conversation!

Actually new research shows that any alcohol is poison and contributes to many cancers, heart disease, liver disease and other illnesses. I no longer drink it because I’m trying to stay as healthy as possible in my senior years. Welcome to the forum!!

Totally respectable and understandable. Best regards.

Thanks for sharing! I really enjoyed reading about your connection to wine and the Mediterranean lifestyle. Those memories with your grandparents sound incredibly special.

As for me, I tend to gravitate toward Cabernet Sauvignon. There’s just something about it that I really enjoy, even if I can’t exactly explain why. I’m not very knowledgeable yet, so I often bounce around between different bottles when I’m choosing one.

I’d love to explore more Spanish wines like the Ramón Bilbao Crianza you mentioned, and I’d also be interested in hearing about some of the Mediterranean dishes you enjoy.

I'm looking forward to more recommendations from everyone!

I think it really depends on the person and the amount. Studies on wine, coffee, and similar things get tossed back and forth by experts like ping-pong balls.

A little red wine might fit into a healthy lifestyle, but drinking in excess is certainly unhealthy.

Choosing not to drink at all is also a healthy choice, and you’re not missing out on any essential benefit by skipping wine entirely.

For many people, it’s more of a social experience and being social is strongly linked to better health, both mentally and physically.

I admire your commitment to staying as healthy as possible.
