Life can be wonderful when we allow it

Have you led a good life? Do you do more good than harm?
I often hear, in relation to a deceased person, "They led a Good Life"
So what is a good life?
Is it one where you are loved and respected by the majority of your family?
What about those who come from severely broken families?
Is a good life derived from satisfaction with your chosen career? As an example, you have chosen an altruistic career in which you earn a high enough income to be able to donate meaningful amounts of monies to certain causes.
Surely a tradesman can and does receive just as much satisfaction from his achievements?
Are people attracted to you because you are always positive and attentive to their needs?
What about your own needs? Surely leading a Good Life entails having your own needs met as well?
One can not go through life giving of oneself without receiving anything in return.
As seen through the deaths of comedians/actors whom we thought, "Had it all"
Does hiding your true feelings really allow one to live a Good Life?
Personally I think if one can look back on their life and see that there were more good times than bad then maybe we can say we have led a "Good Life"
Even those who came from broken families, if they managed to come to terms with that upbringing and moved forward in a positive way, can be said to have lived a Good Life eventually.

This was my father's favourite poem. It meant a lot to him.

"THE MAN IN THE MIRROR"

When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you king for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself and see what that guy has to say.

For it isn't your father, or mother or wife,
who judgement upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life,
Is the guy staring back from the glass.

He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've your most dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.

You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,
And think you're a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum,
If you can't look him straight in the eye.

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears,
If you've cheated the guy in the glass. (Dale Wimbrow)

Great words and meaning

Bretrick, have you read AB Facey's book "A Fortunate Life"?

If not, I suggest you do. It might serve a guide to understanding how a good life can be achieved in spite of hardships and emotional pain.

A Fortunate Life is an autobiography by Albert Facey published in 1981, nine months before his death. It chronicles his early life in Western Australia, his experiences as a private during the Gallipoli campaign of World War I and his return to civilian life after the war. It also documents his extraordinary life of hardship, loss, friendship and love.

I've led a rather ordinary life. There isn't much special about me, if anything!

I poured myself into my career, and ended up just bored by it all. I had a life goal of (mass rolling of eyes) being a published author, which I thought would be super-cool. When I achieved it, and I had the book in my hands, I felt absolutely nothing. It was a real learning moment for me, if anything, it made me depressed. I had set it up to be a great achievement, but the time it was done, I was just unhappy. You just never know.

Have I had a good life? Well, no. I've lived a very ordinary life. I've tried not to do bad things, but along the way have upset people I'd much preferred to have not. None of us are perfect. It's just part of the human condition.

What do you mean life can be wonderful if you allow it to be? You mean like give yourself permission to be wonderful? Describe wonderful? What is a synonym for wonderful?

@Mr Ed
Delightful.
Many people are stuck in a malaise of perpetual melancholy because of past events.
Sometimes all it takes is a change of attitude. There comes a time where taking control of our lives can lead to better outcomes, a better outlook on life.
Allowing oneself to laugh, allowing frivolity in.
Adopting these attitudes can indeed lead to life being wonderful.

You're right there Bretrick. Some people love to wallow in their own self-pity. I have a couple of friends who do nothing but complain about their lives. Attitude is so important . I wake up every morning with a good outlook on my present situation. We have to learn to laugh at ourselves, and thank God I have a happy nature.
