Life expectancy stats

I watched an Australian TV show called Planet America a couple of days ago. It is mostly devoted to following the presidential election but has a small segment called United Stats of America which I find interesting.

I hope you do too.

This week covered life expectancy stats for American males and compared them to a selection of other rich countries. Australia was not one of them.

As you can see, there is a gap of 2.2 years compared to the average of the 12 rich countries.

Then this graphic looks at some reasons for the gap. There are three areas that account for a little over half of this gap

It is not the quality of medical care that is limiting life expectancy. It is gun violence, drug poisonings and road deaths.
These are areas of public health concern that should be of interest to state and federal politicians and also to voters.

Congratulations on never having been shot, run down by a car or overdosed on the drug de jour.

Yes, but I came close to checking out early. Coming back from the Philippines in an old super Consrellation we lost two engines on one wing! Further, we were off Guam over shock infested waters in the middle of the night. A kid sitting across from me was a steward on a navy version of this plane and thought the wing would rip off. Everybody was either smoking or praying. Air/sea rescue planes were hovering around on us. The pilot would rev up the good engines to keep us out of the water and then slow them down so as not to burn them out. We limped into Guam with the dawn, and maybe the prayers were heard, as this old hedonist is still here!

Well, thanks, but I wouldn't have been too tasty then. Now, I would make quite a tasty meal...

Oh, the misspelling is just part of some my language problems and not this...

Warrigal - I've asked this question before and was soundly criticized for daring to suggest that maybe Australia has its own issues: What is the average life span of the Aboriginal people in Australia vs non-Aboriginal people?

There is quite a significant life expectancy gap between indigenous and non indigenous Australians

Life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

For the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population born in 2010–2012, life expectancy was estimated to be 10.6 years lower than that of the non-Indigenous population for males (69.1 years compared with 79.7) and 9.5 years for females (73.7 compared with 83.1).
Between 2005–2007 and 2010–2012, Indigenous life expectancy at birth for boys increased by 1.6 years and by 0.6 years for girls. Over the same period, the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous life expectancy narrowed by 0.8 years for males and 0.1 years for females.

For more information of Indigenous life expectancy, see the Indigenous observatory.
