Life on the Homestead

Been awhile! First I want to tell you I bought myself a pair of Hisea boots. $55, free shipping, and a lifetime warranty. I love them, they fit great, and they are very comfortable. Probably considered a 3 season boot, might be too much for summer.

I started a ton of seeds, tomatoes, peppers, squash, etc. My neighbor stopped yesterday to help get the rototiller(s) started, so I left the dogs inside while he was here. When I went in, I find that Rocky had dumped over a flat of tomato seedlings. Ruined.

All 9 fruit trees made it through the winter, and are about to blossom. 2 of the 4 lilacs are doing great, but the 2 small ones look iffy. The forsythia that I had such hopes for, well, Rocky destroyed it one day while playing. I really really wanted a forsythia, so I'll plant another one, and put a little fence around it.

My youngest sister, Cindy, and one of my nephews, Cameron, came out yesterday. I was so grateful for an hour of help, doing some stuff I can no longer do by myself. Cam moved some 16' cattle panels for me, I think I mentioned once, they were stuck to the ground where they had been used previously. It was a lot of work. Cindy chopped at the grass/roots along the bottom, and Cam pulled, a little at a time. We had to leave 3 of them, they were embedded into the ground. All I can think to do is find my bolt cutters and cut them up into pieces. Maybe 3 sections will come up easier than a 16' piece.

My sister Chris is doing well. Oxygen 24/7 but she's adjusting to it, and has been out driving by herself a few times. She is officially retired now and misses her job, but I think once the weather turns nice she'll feel better. She also loves her flower garden, and she would swim every day if she could.

I cut grass for a half hour this afternoon, until it started to rain. It's cold out, in the mid 40's. I really would like a riding mower but I just do not want to go further into debt. Next Spring. I'll buy one next year when I can pay cash. In the meantime I'll mow paths for the dogs and keep the front and the orchard area mowed.

I will be able to till anytime now, basically once it stops raining and the soil dries out some. I can hardly wait.

Ok folks, hope you are all enjoying your Spring.

Hard to believe that it's raining, again. No precipitation all summer, and now it never seems to stop. I got up quite early this morning to help my youngest sister, she had an appointment, and car troubles. Makes me feel good to be able to step up, she does so much for the family. She has 4 sons, all young adults. She's an amazing woman. Lost her husband to suicide about a year ago, he suffered from substance abuse issues. Anyway, I love my sister ❤️.
love your life style choices - sounds like the wild west in black and white film - wish I could join you!

Hey all. Busy day, it's 50° and overcast. Supposed to rain this afternoon. I might mow for a little while, but right now I'm taking a break from kitchen chores.
I washed dishes, which is a little different here. I haul all my water from a spring about 15 minutes away. I use big plastic jugs that are meant for camping, 4 gallon and 7 gallon. I struggle with the 7 gallon jugs, I can't comfortably carry them when full, so I just don't fill them all the way. And I have many 1 gallon jugs, not the thin ones that water or milk come in, but the heavy ones from juice and tea, with handles. It might seem strange but there are a few families here that are completely off grid, and they also haul water. It's really nice to see others who live the same way. So then I have to heat the water on my propane camp stove. I use 2 big pots, and bring the water to a boil. 2 dishpans, one for washing and one for rinsing.

I made a big pot of chili for canning in the pressure canner. I think I'll get 4 quarts from it. It's nice to have shelf stable, ready to eat meals, rather than just ingredients. Next I will do strips of beef with peppers, in pint size jars.

I could till the front garden area but it's just a little bit wetter than is ideal. I can't plant until Memorial Day Weekend, zone 5b here. I need to put up new fence before I plant, because the chickens love to dig in the freshly tilled soil. So I will till, then wait a couple days, and put the fence up, then plant.

Ok, break is over, I need to get moving. Work won't get done by itself. Hope everyone has a great day.

Overcast and chilly, only 44°. It's very wet out so I don't think I will be able to mow, or till. I definitely have other things to do outside. Fence work is never done. I've fired up the pressure canner again this morning. Beef chunks with potato and carrots. 4 quarts. I'll add a tablespoon of cornstarch when I open/heat it, as a thickener.

Oh my, I'm so over the rain, seems like it never stops. I'm not doing anything today. I slept late, and my coffee is now ready. I always start my day with coffee and then switch to a caffeine free herbal tea in the afternoon. Then I have a sleepy type of tea before bed. I think herbal teas are very good for me. Different ones have different therapeutic properties, and I enjoy all the different flavours.

My nephew broke his leg yesterday, wrestling around with his room mates. He's 2 hours away from home, in college. He has finals this coming week. He's going to be a doctor, specializing in cancer. He's such a good young man. At first my sister, his mom, wanted to go be with him, but they decided that she would wait and go get him after finals, and bring him home. He will stay until the fall semester. Kind of messes things up because he planned on working and saving money while he was home.

I think I'm going to make pasta for dinner, I can't remember the last time I did. Maybe some garlic bread, and a salad. Good day for it.

I'm looking forward to a new month. I think I'm finally getting used to living on less money, since I retired and moved back out to the country. I need to try to drive to the city less often, gas is expensive and going higher again. Pretty soon I'll be able to plant the gardens, and have abundant produce. Can't wait!

I want to publicly praise Stark Brother's, where I order my fruit trees from. I broke down and took advantage of $4.99 shipping, and ordered 2 peach trees and a sweet cherry tree. I planted 8 trees from them last year and they all came through the winter, healthy and are blossoming now.

My father used to order from them. He had pear trees, apple trees and a chestnut tree.
