Lovely photos, an impressive building. Centuries ago a cathedral gave the place it was built in, city status. That's why there are small cities like Southwell. Not all cities have a cathedral, some though, like Liverpool, have a magnificent structure.
Back before WW2 the City of Coventry had a cathedral to match that of Liverpool:

Then, during the bombing of WW2, the City of Coventry was targeted and it's impressive cathedral was no more.

In 1962, Queen Elizabeth attended the consecration of the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral.

The new building was not liked at all. The local newspaper
was quoted as saying: "What The Nazis started, the planners finished."

I remember seeing the consecration on television. "A slab-sided
monstrosity was about the kindest remark. Hideous was mentioned
a few times.

How blessed we are that Liverpool Cathedral, in all it's magnificence, survived.

On the other hand, some 'Cathedrals' are not that. For example Dornoch 'Cathedral' where Madonna and Guy Ritchie's wedding took place, is the Church of Scotland - Presbyterian parish church.
Many Cathedrals are also Parish Churches. Cathedral just means it's the seat of a Bishop.
