Around 1960, the Yovani Golf Club's membership in Canberra was low enough that I, studying at the ANU on a scholarship, was able to join. Kids fished golf balls out of the water trenches, and I bought from them a bucket full. At my first attempt to play golf, I ran out of golf balls at the 7th hole. Well, I never made it to the Master’s Tournament.
I had many pleasant experiences in Australia, and the last one was the most impressive of all.
A few days before leaving Sydney on the SS Canberra to San Francisco, it became known that the Australian Premier Minister Sir Robert Menzies would take a vacation trip on the ship. Before landing in Honolulu, we stood in line at the Purser's Office to change money. Guess what: two people ahead of me stood Sir Menzies like any other passenger. And sailing near Vancouver through the San Juan Straight on a foggy day, Sir Menzies stood by himself at the railing. As I passed, we exchanges some courtesies. If I hadn't known who he was, I never would have guessed.
Australia is a wonderful country, and I will always love it.
