Living only on social security

The dope on the double-dippers:

New Bill Social Security $1976 INCREASES to $3559 | Do You Qualify?

The outgoing politicians' gift to the bureaucracy.

The social security fairness act passed by a huge majority today. It’s been a stressful 3 days with all the various votes and a few senators trying to kill the bill by adding amendments. President Biden has said he will sign it.

I’m thrilled as right now I’m only receiving 40% of my SS and it will improve my quality of life. It was a bipartisan effort and the incoming administration supported it also. Life is good!!
I'm happy for you (and others affected by WEP) Terry. When will this new law be implemented? I have a cousin in Puerto Rico, who taught there for decades and she's affected. As I stated in another reply....IMHO, that government workers didn't contribute to SS was something out of their control. Government agencies that didn't take out SS for their workers did them a great disservice, something those employees shouldn't have had to suffer for. Now if someone can show me that workers who were affected by WEP had another means of paying into the system, that might change my opinion. But as far as I know, anyone who wasn't self employed didn't have a way to do that.

This is exactly what happened to my Huzz and the city he worked for rigged up this being "v0ted" by the employees.

That's why there were things like 457, 403(b), and later 401(k) provisions in the tax code. They should have put money into those as applicable.

It takes effect in Jan and they will back pay people for the year of 2023. People will only be paid if they have 40 quarters of work in jobs that did pay in and it’s what they earned in jobs that paid into SS. People are not being paid for years they didn’t pay into it.

So I had 19 years in jobs paying into the system and instead of getting my earned benefits of 1k/month I only got 451/month. Biden still has to sign it but said that he will. No clue when people will actually start to see the money. It affects 2-3 million people.

I have a pension that pays me for the 15 years that I was out of the SS system but worked for the state. I don’t expect and am not receiving SS benefits for these 15 years. The East Coast unions had a big influence on this bill passing being very active and vocal in campaigning for their members. I’m grateful to them.

Met a gentleman yesterday who wants to rent a house. He told me his social security is 950/mth. How can he ever ever eat? Anyone else living only on ss? How???
I don't know what her checks were like but my mom knew the schedule for all free food donations, and a local church paid some utility bills.

This will further exacerbate the upcoming SS funding crisis, which should have been shored up at the same time. Very frustrating.

six months is more than enough time for people living on minimal amounts to suffer huge consequences.
3 million people getting what they rightly earned is justice finally achieved. There’s people being hurt because of being denied what they’re entitled to. Some of these seniors have had their stories told on the national news. There’s many people that split their careers between 2 systems and many were teachers.

Politicians will sort out SS when it gets closer because they don’t do things ahead of time unfortunately. Sadly some administrations have borrowed from the Medicare fund and not repaid the money. If it had been left to grow there wouldn’t be a problem now.

Anyway I’m sure I’m wasting my breath as some people are determined to be negative if it’s not helping them. I’ve been enjoying all of the public employees happiness on Facebook as for many this will make a big difference in their lives.

But it’s not deserved. People who think it is don’t understand how social security payments are calculated to give more of a benefit to low income earners than higher income earners. They leave that part out to make it look unfair.

Merry Christmas, Teacher Terry, but that is not true.

In the very beginning of Social Security, it was known to be unsustainable. Care of the poor is the duty of churches and charities and the public.
Merry Christmas! Helping poor people is the government’s responsibility. The government literally wastes billions of dollars on unnecessary spending, tax cuts for the rich elites, etc. Yet the first thing that comes to mind for some people is not to help the poor. It truly boggles my mind how some people think.

WE are the government.
I know that. But when people say the government shouldn’t help there’s not enough donations from individuals and organizations to take care of poor people. Plus they have bills and need to be able to count on some money coming in.

As a former social worker I can say that there are some lazy people that don’t want to work but they aren’t the majority. I have seen what it does to kids when they don’t get enough food. No kid should have to experience that.

Then they should not have called it 'Social Security'. Had they called it what it is, it would never have been adopted here.
It should never have been adopted in any case until sustainable.

Not only that, but it is a tragic waste of man's potential to work his life away just for the barest essentials. But the government's way is the wrong way. They take most everything for themselves. And they are inefficient, and when they are efficient, they are corrupt.

The idea of SS was that seniors who could no longer work shouldn't be poor or lose their dignity. It designed to help end a Dickensian scenario with seniors bouncing from one relative's home to the next, and/or begging at various charities hoping to garner enough to keep body and soul together.

SS was indeed sustainable up until now. 90 years. Congress needs to get off its butt and fix SS, but they'll wait until the situation is dire because that's how they operate.

It just occurred to me since I was so focused on WEP that I also qualify under GPO. 2 of my 3 marriages were for over 20 years which means I qualify for half of their SS if it’s more than mine. It doesn’t affect what they collect.

If anyone dies I get all of their SS. I’m on good terms with both but one ex is 8 years older than me.

If I hadn't gotten a DIC awarded to go with SS, I don't know how I could survive. My late veteran DH was totally disabled, later awarded TDIU by VA and survived long enough after he was awarded for me to qualify for DIC. I cared for him for over two decades of disability. He died a year ago from Prostate Cancer, heart issues, and other causes.

Problem is, around here anyway, there are waiting lists years long for that housing. (And the fact that housing like that in a town near here all burnt to the ground in a wildfire, so the length of the lists shot up fast. So, this area is terrible to be a senior or low-income earner in; most places are here in the U.S. of Avarice.)
Waiting lists are ridiculous. Looking for a roommate but have not had good luck with last two.
