Local Hero

I've been posting a few little "sketches" of the villages round here in the Diary section, but I thought I'd post this one here.... The village of Pennan, about 10 miles from me was the setting for the 1983 film, "Local hero". Like many other small fishing villages, Pennan clings to a narrow strip of land and is accessable only by a steep, narrow, twisting road. The importantly, this village has a small hotel, a harbour AND a red telephone box.

If you haven't seen the film, I recommend that you do. It's not "laugh out loud" funny, but it accurately captures the gentle humour and the nature of the people who live here. Without spoiling the story .... a young oil executive is sent from Houston to the remote Scottish village of Ferness (Pennan) to oversee the purchase of the entire village to build an oil refinery. In the days before mobile phones, he has to rely on the one public telephone box in the village...

For years afterwards, the telephone box was the most used and most photographed phone box in Britain. People from across the world would come to Pennan to see and use the famous telephone. The beach scenes were however shot on the other side of Scotland at Camusdarach beach.
