Local Taxes to Increase

I heard on the morning news that a local community will have to increase property taxes by as much as 30% because they are not receiving aid from the Federal Gov't. Bad timing there - a lot of people were laid off during the pandemic. How are they going to afford that? What happened to the State Aid program?

government needs to get back some of this free money their giving out. they forget its our money in the first place.

No big surprise taxes will increase. Taxes come from businesses & employed people.
Closed businesses & unemployed people aren't paying the taxes to support the need to pay for the services.

Should be interesting the way the need to support Soc. Sec. & Medicare will affect taxes.

Still costs the same to pick up your garbage, fill pot holes and put gas in police cruisers, whether there's a pandemic or not. The money has to come from somewhere unless you want to have the cruisers sit with empty tanks, the potholes become caverns, and the trash pile up on the street.

In the past, the federal government was the backstop for times like this. If they have excess money for tax cuts favoring the wealthy, as they had recently, they should be able to scrape up a bit for serious local shortfalls given the reason for the problem.

Sounds reasonable except that there are thousands if not millions of local shortfalls . The stimulus was supposed to help but didn't.

Things are hurting in our area due to the big decline in sales tax revenue since March.

We rely heavily on sales tax from airline tickets, hotel/motel room taxes, and new car sales all of which have been off this year. Property tax revenues will be the next big hit when people that are out of work and landlords that are not receiving rent are not able to or are not willing to pay taxes on time.

The federal government is the only one that has the ability to print money.

The other levels of government have to do it the old fashioned way by raising taxes or by cutting services.

With millions still unemployed, and tax revenues falling, it's quite likely that property taxes, etc., will rise. Local governments, especially, have little means of generating the necessary revenues without raising taxes.

Personally, I'm waiting for the release of next years health care plans and premiums....which should be available starting Oct. 15th.....with all the chaos and expenses this Corona Virus has caused, I will be pleasantly surprised if our premiums aren't raised substantially.
