London Electric Bus Explodes

View attachment 324705
Fears are growing that the London Mayor's 1,000-strong fleet of electric buses could also be at risk after a huge blast ripped off the back of an Optare Metrodecker 1050 bus in Wimbledon this morning. Full details here.

I need to know what caused the fire. If it was the battery exploding, then it's a major issue. Let's not forget, we're trying to go all electric (battery powered), with the first all electric (battery powered) line coming in on the railways too. There are many concerns, and not just fires. For example, available range (miles) are reduced in cold weather. While the weather in the UK doesn't seem to get too cold very often these days, it's still something that needs managing.

It would be good to have honest statistics on this model bus, in use wherever in the world.

Not that any of us like to think we live in a world of airliners whose doors blow out, or a world in which car accidents happen, but... Unfortunately, I tend to think the history of early petrol-fueled automobiles, motorcycles, tractors, locomotive engines, airplanes may have involved a lot of accidents. And coal/steam powered vehicles before that. Before that there were runaway riding horses, wagons & carriages.☹️

the fact is we very rarely if ever hear about a double decker bus going on fire.. which is obviously why this one got into the papers...

''Every day, over 7,500 London buses carry 6 million passengers on more than 700 different routes. A single double-decker bus can seat up to 100 passengers.19 Jun 2022''

One of the biggest fears is those on the upper deck being able to exit quickly.

Wonder how long or how many gallons of water to put this fire out. Reports of single electric car fires taking 30,000 gallons plus

I doubt that they would use any water, on an electric bus
fire, I believe that the electricity produced to run a bus is
around 400 volts, they would use powder, or maybe foam.

These, Pure Electric Buses, have only recently appeared, just
before Christmas, late October, or early November, hopefully
the fire service is ready for them.

Mike.

They need to pull those buses and reinspect them, like they've done with the model of the plane that had its door blow off. Seems this is the third bus that caught fire. No passengers were in the other two since the buses were still in the garage.

But back in the old days we did not have all the litigious lawyers running around chomping at the bit to sue anyone and everyone. Now a days manufacturers need to be sure there designs are flawless and people will not be injured as a result of product malfunction or misuse.

I wanted to add the url to this show, but, you tube has blocked me because I'm using add blocker.
Anyway, a quick google search with this typed in will bring it up.

The Exploding Ford Pinto Scandal Was NOTHING Compared To What's Happening Today - Busses Go Boom

Those exploding laptop batteries about 10 years ago seem meaningless at this point. Are they they using the same tech, designs etc? Theoretically gigantic laptop batteries?

Mike, do you know if that order was put on hold (pending investigation)?
I don't know the answer to that, Murrmurr, but probably not.

The buses are built to rigid standards, in order to pass some
very exacting safety tests, so it must be a faulty battery cell,
that caused this, the chargers will be very powerful and rapid,
this will find any defective battery, plus the type used are not
very stable, electric bicycles are exploding and destroying homes,
plus cars, all versions of, rechargeable vehicles, have had similar
events.

I also owe an apology to "WhatinThe", they are using water, this
fire must be behind the batteries, I think, I know that I wouldn't
use water near a heavy-duty battery pack.

Mike.

So scary. Isn't this the 3rd bus that exploded in 2 years? I understand the other 2 were just parked in the garage and blew up.
E bikes in the US have been the cause of many fires recently. And it's not easy to put these types of fires out.
