Remember having to pay for long distance, so you made fast and short calls, especially from the pay phone?

Yes. In the 1990's AT&T started an offer for unlimited long distance on our landline for $20 a month. Since most of our relatives were long distance, we took that option and saved a lot of money. But as we all know, since those years much else changed and went up with landlines, so I cut the cord almost 3 years ago - no more landline here.

I have maybe 20 AT&T phone cards that United gave me to use for making long distance calls.
I have had them for at least 30 years. They are actually worthless and they can’t even be cashed in.

Of course, that is a non-issue now!

Also being mindful of the rates at different times of day/night.

Then there were the collect calls to some fictitious personas a code to let people know that you made it safely to your destination.

I can never forget, since my adolescence was plagued by my parents screaming at me to "Get off the phone!"
