I thought this was very interesting. http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2015/07/03/3676931/solar-plane-world-record/

On Friday, Swiss Pilot André Borschberg broke at least three world records.
Just before noon, Borschberg landed the Solar Impulse 2 plane in Hawaii after taking off from Japan nearly five days before. The plane was powered without a drop of jet fuel, using only electricity generated from the sun striking the photovoltaic panel across its wing.

Borschberg actually broke one world record before his flight ended, for taking the longest nonstop solo flight without refueling in aviation history. The previous record was a 76-hour flight, held by Steve Fossett for his nonstop flight around the world in 2005.

But when he landed, Borschberg also broke the record for the world’s longest successful solar-powered flight, both by time and by distance. The flight lasted 4 days, 21 hours and 50 minutes, and traveled 8,209 kilometers across the Pacific.

There has never been a solar flight as long as this in the history of aviation.

I saw a thing about it this morning on Weather Channel, I believe it was, waiting in a hotel room for my wife to do her "toilette", so we could clear out and go back home. They showed the actual plane soaring aloft, (that IS a big jet above, yes?), it had a very wide wingspan in comparison to fuselage length. I have been wondering about the circumstance presented when there is little or no sunlight, can it fly above cloud cover, what about at night? So, heavy batteries are kept charged in flight, for use at such times?

As an aside; Wife and I took advantage of two free nights at the Edgewater Hotel, to celebrate by 73rd., yesterday, 2 July. Knowing today, Friday, would be a day off for many, 3-day weekend, a large portion of the eager population of Californians within easy driving distance, would be crowding into the "Gambling Mecca", making the presence of these 2 old farts much less enjoyable to them being there. I still have a $25 dining certificate, sent to me for my B.D., good all month. We can both eat heartily for that amount in this place! imp

Instead, its wings were equipped with 17,000 solar cells that powered propellers and charged batteries. The plane ran on stored energy at night. The trans-Pacific leg was the riskiest of the plane's global travels as there was nowhere for it to land in an emergency.
