Look Out for that Hurricane

Noticed no one mentioned Sandy, she did a real number on Long Island, New Jersey and Staten Island...I think it was 2011?
I'll never forget Sandy GF1954! We lost power for almost a week. It was the third week in October 2012 and it had already gotten quite chilly. I stayed here for two nights and couldn't take it anymore so went to stay with my son, DIL and grandchildren until our power was restored. My husband had rented storage in the basement of a home in an area that was not affected. He had a freezer down there so we didn't lose all of our refrigerated foods but did lose some, though not enough to be reimbursed by insurance. We were also blessed not to have structural damage in our complex. The storm made me realize that I'll need a plan C too. I thought that if we couldn't live at home for a couple of weeks we might go stay at our timeshare in Atlantic City, N.J. But all roads leading south were shut down and most of A.C. was quite flooded. It also adversely affected train and air travel.

As bad as we had it here in northeast Jersey, the shore areas suffered far worse. My former supervisor and his wife were on vacation with another former co-worker and his GF in Mexico. Even as a supervisor, he was not one to worry about much so when a neighbor called and told him about the impending storm, he was not that concerned. When they got back to the states, they had to lay over in Texas due to the storm. By the time he got home, he had no house! It was literally flattened. And so many others in shore areas suffered the same fate. Luckily for him and his wife, they had money so they just went out and bought another house. But as of the last I checked, some people still had not received adequate compensation so they could proceed with rebuilding. Here are some pictures of the damage Superstorm Sandy caused.

@Kaila Great idea to put some items in a cooler so you can avoid opening the refrigerator door in a power outage!

but most of these tropical storms and hurricanes, lose their huge and destructive power , before getting as far North along the East coast of the USA, as New Jersey and NY city.
That is true, but the operative word here is "most". The Gulf Coast and lower Atlantic states get more hurricanes, but for that reason tend to be better prepared.

I am no longer at risk from Hurricanes, but I lived much of my life in places that were. Here is pictures of my house taken after Hurricane Dennis, Florida, 2004 I think (that is a younger and fatter me):

Note in the second picture our refrigerator on it's side, on top of the plastic shelves. Turns out refrigerators float and make excellent battering rams. The beer was still cold, a good thing I needed one.

Sandy surely was terrible for so many people! :(

That post of Diva's , with the date of Sandy....reminds me that the one I described coming through my windows, was longer ago than that. Perhaps 25 years or possibly 3 decades ago.

My daughter owned a townhouse in Hoboken for quite a number of years and liked living there. Among other things, her commute down to Times Square was pretty easy. She bought it after returning from a position in Hong Kong where she managed two watch factories, one of which was across the border in mainland China. I was greatly relieved when her company moved her back to the NYC office. She sold that townhouse a couple of years ago and moved to Washington State where she has set up her own consulting business. She still goes out to Hong Kong a couple of times a year and I cringe every time she makes that trip.
She never experienced flooding at her townhouse house in Hoboken, and I will admit that area is very pretty. I can certainly see it as an area where a fellow like Nice would enjoy living.
Your daughter is awesome! I like to take the train to the Hoboken waterfront park as often as I can. Haven't done it lately because we've had so much rain. It is a lovely area and I always feel safe when I go there. I've said it's like a mini New York City...but a whole lot cleaner. You mention Hong Kong. I'm in the middle of a two parter of the Love Boat where they are in Hong Kong. Most of what they show in their shots of the "scenery" and landmarks don't appeal to me at all.

I’ve been to Hong Kong four times and it is a very crowded and congested place. Other than some superb food and some spectacular night life it doesn’t appeal to me either. The scenery is OK, but not spectacular by any means. It is a surprisingly clean place.
When I was stationed on Okinawa and again in South Korea, wives really loved going there for the shopping. My wife found a couple of things when she went, but did not go crazy like some women did.

Forest fires, Floods, Hurricanes, etc., seem to be increasing, all over the world. Mother Nature is getting a bit PO'd about what we are doing to the planet.
Nope... don't think so. social media is now allowing you to see all the stuff that never made a newspaper story (except maybe local) or the 6 o'clock news on the old 3 channel TV.
A quick look back through history shows all kinds of mega storms, fires, volcano's, floods, etc.

This is the second week that we have had several inches of rain. Henri will affect the northeast more than the middle Atlantic this go round.
