I found a ring in the street (mentioning the street) and posted it on Facebook, just as a show and tell. Seven people contacted me saying it was theirs. They have a photo of the ring, so they can describe it and know the street so they can say they lost it there. How can I know the real owner, if any of these are?

I don't think you can. I'd turn in in to the police and let them sort it out.

Or you could ask them if they have a photo of whoever owns the ring, wearing it. Or a receipt that clearly describes the exact ring?

Photos can be manipulated too easily nowadays. I think Butterfly's suggestion is best

I took it to a jewelry shop. They said the stones were not diamonds (but didn't elaborate). I posted this as a follow-up message on Facebook. The demands to return it suddenly stopped.

Good to know. I think If I ever find a ring, I would say just that, "ring found, stones not likely to be diamonds, but ring is missing it's rightful owner" lol.
