I loved his smile too @hearlady. There was a picture of him on the cover of either Essence or Ebony decades ago in which he looked just like my first love. I can't find it now though. Even as he aged, he remained handsome. I found out some very interesting facts about Mr. Gossett on Wikipedia and other sites.
~He was born in Coney Island (Brooklyn), NY.
~He had polio as a child.
~After being encouraged to audition by one of his teachers, he got a role in the Broadway play Take A Giant Step when he was just 17.
~He was 6'4" and turned down an offer to play for the N.Y. Knicks basketball team to accept a role in the Broadway play A Raisin In The Sun (1959).

~He was considered a talented folk singer in the 60's and co-wrote the anti-war song Handsome Johnny with Richie Havens. The song was released in 1967. Louis released an album From Me To You in 1970 featuring his compositions.
~He was supposed to go to a party at Sharon Tate's house but went home to shower and change clothes. Before leaving for the party, he heard the news about the horrible murders at the Tate house.
~He openly talked about the racism he faced in Hollywood early on. In 1966, he was handcuffed to a tree for 3 hours by Beverly Hills police.
~His first cousin Robert Gossett was part of the main cast in The Closer. And my cousin Keith David has acted with Louis.

Mr. Gossett won more then just an Oscar. During his illustrious career, he won Daytime and Primetime Emmys, 2 Golden Globes, 2 NAACP Image Awards and several other awards, as well as receiving several nominations. Hollywood has lost a great actor and humanitarian. Rest in Paradise Mr. Gossett.
