Tobacco addiction is a tough thing to overcome. Not saying anyone must, but if you want to ...
The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards says kicking heroin is easier than quitting smoking.

I started in my late teens as a gullible student. Quit from the age of 22, I say from because it took months and months to finally lose the addiction. Since then though I have been an ardent non-smoker and that's because I have lost good friends and family to the evil weed.

I have long heard how hard it was, and did try 3 times with no success. So there's truth in that.

But my luck was good, I was at work and at 3:30 pm, one worker stoped me working as I was pale faced and staggering. Yes, heatstroke.

Went to the hospital, stayed overnight and left. I was sick as a dog for the week, no eating, drinking or smoking. Finally feeling better, I realized I didn't feel like smoking.

So I thought "Let's see how long I can go" (thinking 2-3weeks) that has lasted since May 20th, 2013. The day I quit. I'm still today stunned I'm not wanting a smoke after any meal, or when bored, or even around smokers.

Truly lucky. Yes, I do have COPD, didn't get away clean.

My dad quit cold turkey when his doctor advised him to. My poor mother finally quit after a stay in the hospital with lung problems. She had a terrible time trying to quit but finally won the battle. i never smoked after watching my mother struggle with it.

Back then it contained tobacco!!
One way the tobacco industry has manipulated cigarettes to increase addictiveness is by loading cigarettes with chemical compounds. Bronchodilators were added so that tobacco smoke can more easily enter the lungs. Sugars, flavours and menthol were increased to dull the harshness of smoke and make it easier to inhale. Ammonia was added so that nicotine travels to the brain faster.

The result of these manipulations in cigarette design is devastating. The surgeon general found that today’s cigarette smokers, have a much higher risk for lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than smokers had in 1964, despite today's smokers smoking fewer cigarettes. Even though there are fewer smokers today than there were decades ago, smoking remains the number one cause of preventable death, accounting for 1,300 American deaths every single day.

Like all drugs, Nicotine releases Dopamine into the brain, which gives people a good sensation. At one time, I don't know if it's still true, but Nicotine was the number one most addictive drug out there.

I think nicotine is still listed as a narcotic and pretty close to the top of the list for addiction. Just remember, a regular chest x-ray is one thing, but having a CT scan can show any damage to the lungs much better.

I think if Packerjohn’s chest x-ray is clear, he’s been very lucky to this point. It may be a good idea to quit while he’s ahead. I used to hear on TV that the moment you quit smoking, your lungs begin to heal. I take this to mean it’s never too late to quit.

I smoked from age 13 through 30, when I quit (for the last time), for my daughters. I dreamt about smoking for literally years (possibly a decade) after quitting.
same here madusa ....13 to 31......i was getting fed up with it anyway , wasting alot of the cigarettes , so i just stopped, but it was hard going until hubby offered me a new car.....so the kids , said...ohhh go on mum ......lol

Going upstairs to find my husband and ask about that car he owes me.... LOL
(Good for you for quitting, btw! :)

I'm surprised how many people at work smoke. I'm glad I quit at 25. But we all have to do what works for us. Can't lose 20 pounds without gaining it back.
