Female pheasants are the worst mothers to their chicks. Where I used to live in a very rural area a female pheasant hatched her chicks on the grass verge beside the road. As I was walking past a low flying RAF plane startled the mother pheasant and she disappeared into the undergrowth leaving her young chicks to fend for themselves. I tried to shoo them into the undergrowth too, but several were killed by passing traffic.

Talking of pheasants, I had a very weird experience with a male pheasant about three years ago at our previous property. I went for a walk in the riverside meadow beside our home one afternoon. The meadow is used to breed pheasants for shooting purposes. Normally when you pass any of the birds they fly away from you, which they all did on that day apart from one bird. It came running up to me and began chatting in pheasant speak! I was astounded, especially as it accompanied me on my walk and all the way home! I would have thought I was imagining the incident if my husband hadn't witnessed the pheasant walking down the drive with me. I went inside and had a cuppa, the bird was still there about an hour later, peeking in through the patio doors. I took a photo of the bird as the event was so remarkable. Several days later I was walking through the meadow again when my pheasant spotted me from the far side of the river, it ran across the bridge and greeted me again, all the other pheasants had run or flown away. It didn't walk me home that time. There was a pheasant shoot the next day, and I never saw my birdie friend again, it would have been sad if it had been shot.
