I am reading this right now and find it a very depressing book. It's about a young girl in Pennsylvania who is assaulted and murdered by a neighbor. She is in her personal heaven and can see what is happening in the ensuing and future events and how her family struggles with it. Her mother has an affair with the investigating detective and then runs off to California leaving her famiy and the detective. Her father seems beyond coping with the stresses. He accuses the neighbor, but the investigating detective can find no evidence or proof of it. Her brother, who was 4 or 5 when the story began and grows up to be a hostile adolescent. Her younger sister and maternal grandmother seem to be the only ones that can handle things. I have 4 chapters to go, so I don't know how it ends, but it was made into a movie in 2009. From what I've read about it, the movie departs substantially from the book by leaving out the more violent and controversial themes.
