Luekemia Charity Spends Less Than 1% On Patients

Similar situation with Disabled American Veterans, sending address labels out unsolicited; my wife sends them a couple of bucks each time.

Not surprising, though, about your find. "Charity" invokes sympathy in lots of folks. The unscrupulous take advantage of that fact. imp

Some charities support research and public information campaigns rather than actual treatments. Is it possible that this charity does this?

Ok, having read the report, the answer to my own question is NO.

We have quite a few PAID charity collectors who visit our area.. ( one of my sons worked from them for a week)
My son was paid 50 cents in the dollar ...The people who hired him took 45 cents , and gave the charity 5 cents..

That's one of the reasons that I'm very reluctant to give to any of the charities. Maybe it's better to give to your local animal shelter where you can see your dollars at work. I also looked up that one Operation Smile and after reading about it, decided that for my birthday, I would 'give myself a smile' by donating $240.00 to repair one child's face. One of the things I found on their website is the following in their FAQ:

'Q. What percentage of your funds goes to actual charity work rather than salaries, offices and administration?

All of our financial information, including IRS 990 forms are available on our website.
During FY 13, 70.2% of all donations went directly to programs, while 20.9 % was spent on fundraising, and 8.9% for administration expenses.

And this BBB page states that out of 20 requirements, Operation Smile only fails on two of them, one is to do with the number of times they meet every year (not enough) and the other has to do with compensation of Board members but that one is answered by OS on that page. http://www.give.org/charity-reviews/national/health/operation-smile-in-virginia-beach-va-338 and seems pretty reasonable to me.

I think you have to do your due diligence before you give to anyone.
