Is something even bigger brewing ??

Fiji is in the South Pacific. I've noticed a lot of large earthquake activity all around the Pacific "ring of fire" the past week,
including the recent large earthquake swarms in central and northern Alaska.

Powerful magnitude 8.2 earthquake strikes in the Pacific near Tonga and Fiji

" A powerful magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck in the Pacific Ocean close to the islands of Tonga and Fiji on Sunday, the US Geological Survey (USGC) said.

But the undersea quake was too deep to trigger a tsunami, according to the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which added that small tsunami waves have been observed but no damage reported.

"I would not expect any damage. People will feel it but it's so deep that I would not expect any damage," USGS geophysicist Jana Pursley told Reuters.

A Civil Defence spokesman said there was no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the quake. "

The Earth's crust is constantly shifting, and eventually nearly every location near a "fault line" will have an earthquake. The San Andreas fault in California has been growing for decades, and some day, much of California may become an island. Yes, the earth's crust is in constant motion - we just have such relatively short life spans that the changes usually occur unobserved by people other than scientists.

The stress on the San Andreas is indeed increasing year-by-year. When it slips we are likely to see a quake in the 7 range. However, the geological nature of those tectonic plates is that So Cal is moving north toward San Francisco, not west or out to sea. Having lived very close to the epicenter of a 6.7 earthquake I can tell you that 20 seconds of intense shaking can do more damage than you might imagine.
 
I'm relieved that as far as I could tell there weren't injuries or damage. An 8+ earthquake is strong. We started having them here a few years ago (no I'm not going to debate the politics of it). I had never been in an earthquake before and there was one that was 5.6 in Oklahoma that we could detect here in Kansas. I was sleeping and at first it felt like my bed was vibrating and then my apartment was shaking and sounded like it was going to crack in half. All the blinds were rattling. I live fairly close to a lot of railroad tracks so I thought maybe there had been a derailment because trains can really be noisy at times. I had no idea what was happening but it was rather terrifying for a few minutes. I found out the next morning it was an earthquake. I added earthquake watch app to my phone. I never expected to have to add earthquake safety to my my list of what to do in floods, tornadoes, blizzards, ice storms, prairie fires.

In this area the politics of it are debates about causes: fracking, wind energy (big wind turbines creating ground disturbances), decreasing water levels causing ground instability and other people saying it's an indicator of end times. So, sorry to say, around here I've actually seen people get kind of crazy about the causes to the point they almost become violent about it which to me is scarier than the earthquake itself.

I wonder if somehow earthquakes will be connected with global warming ??

Fracking/injection wells have been blamed for earthquakes in Oklahoma and also swarms of earthquakes here in the North Texas area.

I've never been in an earthquake, but I am interested in them. Maybe that's because there are geologists in my family.

The Bible does mention earthquakes at the end of the age, including the biggest one ever in Revelation 16:18. But the book of Revelation is filled with symbolism, so "earthquake" might be symbolic of something else.
 
Whether fracking and/or global warming are accelerating (or for that matter, decreasing) the frequency and intensity of EQs is open to question. While much is known about EQs, there's a whole lot more to learn.

Dr. Lucy Jones, (now retired) from the USGS and Cal Tech is a Seismologist Extraordinaire. Hers is a household name and she has near rock star status in Southern California. She's the media's A-listed go-to source when there's any kind of seismological event here or abroad.

Dr. Jones wrote an excellent book "The Big Ones: How Natural Disasters Have Shaped Us (and (What We Can Do About Them)" published just this past April. I can highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in the science and history of earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanoes and floods.

These plates move frequently. An EQ of this size feels huge if when it's underneath you or quite nearby. From 170 miles away it would be barely perceptible.
