Maintaining Professional Credentials.

Yesterday my dental hygienist was telling me that every five years she has to do 75 hours of courses, many are online, and then write an exam.

My husband is a retired engineer. He said they have regular tests now too.

I didn’t realize that there was an expectation for maintaining professional credentials. Are there are other professions that have the same? Should there realistically be?

This is in British Columbia. I don’t know about other places in Canada.

To maintain your foster care certification you're required to do 12 hours of study within every 6-month period. They have online classes or you can take classes at their offices (except during a pandemic), and you also have to do the CPR course every 2 years. You have to do that in person, of course, so that requirement is deferred until covid restrictions are lifted.

I had several hours of course credits (I was ahead on the classes) when I told Child Services that I didn't want to do foster care anymore unless I HAD to, to make sure I got Paxton if he's taken from his mom again. They said Paxton will be placed with me whether I maintain my certificate or not, so I "quit" foster parenting - because I only have room for 1 child here and I want it to stay available for Paxton.

My daughter is a pharmacist and has to do annual CE'S. She does them online and she says they are needed in her field as new drugs are coming out every day. She studies through out the year keeping up with new things in her field.
